South Africa's free fibre line speed increases - When they will end

Free fibre line speed upgrades implemented during South Africa's COVID-19 lockdown are set to be stopped in the coming weeks.

In March, major fibre network operators (FNOs) announced they would offer line speed upgrades free of charge to customers through ISP partners.

This was done to help meet the increase in broadband demand as more people worked from home, and stayed indoors.

Link Africa, Vumatel, Frogfoot, MetroFibre, and Openserve all increased speeds.

If it is that easy to upgrade everyone to these speeds (I received 40/20mbps) almost overnight, why are we paying this amount for half the speed (on a 20/10 package).
Does it cost ISP's or the FTTH companies more?
Just curious?

Well, it's pretty much the same reason it costs $600 to make an iPhone 11 Pro Max, but they can sell it for $1,099. Or the cost of diamonds (shiny bits of compressed rock). Prices aren't determined by innate value but by market forces and demand.

Must say it's going to suck to go back to 50/50 again after having 100/100 on SADV for R999

All they showed us was that the market on their products is VERY healthy. At the very very least its 100%.

They should make it permanent. Maybe not the double speed like on some networks but the 10mbps bumps.

FF will, seemingly on the same day, be pulling back the speeds and increasing their pricing. Sad sad day.

Anecdotal and all, but quite a few peeps in the FF neighborhood around me have indicated that they are contemplating a downgrade if the increases are too much.

Good marketing tool, get you hooked to higher speed.
Many users will pay extra to stay on the 100/100...
With MFN 50/50, I only got extra 10Mbps - not enough to become "hooked".

This bump to 100/100 was more potent than heroin, I am already googling rehab packages for when this ends.

Got bumped up to 200/200Mbps, not a lot of difference compared to 100/100 for pretty much anything besides steam downloads as was already more than fast enough. If they changed it to 200/200Mbps I wouldn't downgrade to the 100/100Mbps though, it's more of a case of budget than what the actual speed is.

As awesome as my upgrade to 200 Mbps was for big downloads, I haven't really noticed much difference in my day to day usage. That 80 gig game download will now take 2 hours instead of 1, not really a train smash. Will probably be perfectly happy staying on 100 Mbps...

Thats why most of the providers that did participate started with the baby accounts and worked up

Yip, I'll probably drop to 200/200 from 500/500. Was on 200/100 on Openserve, so used to the 200 :)

I'm with mweb and octotel and have been on the 20mb uncapped for close on a year. The price has come down from R829 ( I think originally) to R699 in that time.
Their next step up is a 100mb package. While that would have been cool as a free upgrade I dont think it would have made any difference in my daily usage. I use what I use +- 300GB -400GB a month.
It certainly would have been awesome to experience 100mb, though, 20mb is fast enough for my streaming and usage patterns. Okay bigger downloasd may take longer...meh, I can wait. :)
Maybe when the 100mb prices come down quite a bit more.....

Wonder how many will upgrade as a result of experiencing better speeds?

Openserve - 31 July. Still a while to go then.

As to a permanent upgrade. I'll see how lock down is going. It's been handy for downloading old steam games but my streaming fine on my 40/20.
