South Africa's new driving licence card delays

South Africa's tender process for producing new driving licence cards has been plagued by constant delays, with many pointing to an irregular bidding process as the cause.

The need for a revamped driving licence card system became evident in 2020 and 2021 after government struggled to clear the significant backlog in renewals caused by the Covid-19 lockdown.

We don't need new cards, we already have them...

The cards are secured using PKI digital certificates, and the chip in each contains sufficient space to allow for the storage of identity information, driver's licence details, and other information relevant to state services.

5 year eye test at an optician that is submitted to enatis by the optician would be an option

Ultimately though, this expiring card nonsense is merely a revenue stream and not about safety etc etc
