South Africa's new traffic fine system that introduces demerits is ready to roll out

Great idea!

But where are the traffic cops that will be implementing this? Somewhere, sure, but nowhere near where they are supposed to be - yet still collecting their salaries at the end of each month.

I saw one the other day in his natural habitat. Was under a tree while sitting looking at a traffic camera. 100s of cars riding on the yellow line, others just blatantly breaking the law. Butt he majestic cop just sat and yawned while the camera flashed on occassion.

potential upside: if the proceeds of fines go to some central authoritah without the locals reaping the direct benefit, perhaps the sons of crack-whores traffic cops will be less inclined to hide under every f-ing bush all the time

About bloody time - the lawlessness on the roads - especially in JHB - has reached epidemic proportions.
People will whine about this change all day long - but judging by the lack of respect on the roads at the moment its is the vast majority of people who deserve their licenses revoked.
Its the wild west out there and its time it stopped.
The people responsible for the lack of respect aren't the people who will feel the effect of any fines..

Whose going to enforce this ?

+1

How is this demerit system going to work for taxi drivers.
Taxi drivers already ignore fines as it's racist and colonial.

I doubt the average taxi driver has a valid license. You can't demerit something that doesn't exist.

Finally, no more cooldrink money and/or lunch money, traffic cops will now get alcohol and dinner money.

This has zero to do with stopping lawlessness and everything to do with moneymaking.

There are already plenty of laws - there is no enforcement.

Enforce the existing laws which have worked before and in other countries instead of making political statements.

Here they are too useless for even that!

And how do you suppose this will happen? Through the magic fairies flying above reporting the bad drivers lol?

It will be as always, cops setting up stops in lucrative areas such as people speeding in a BMW in a 60 zone because that’s their highest chance of getting a successful bribe.

They don’t give 2 **** about safety on the road or the Wild West otherwise they would have started with taxis :)

Good luck with trying to get a fine scrapped from your name. The system doesn't work.

I have had the privilege of driving in JHB and PTA for 40 years. The lawlessness on the roads there is nothing compared to same in CPT. The DA only complains about applying AARTO, but in fact protects criminality in all it's forms. Infrastructure and services are first class, but lawlessness is up there too. Bring on AARTO!

What about permanent residents driving on a foreign license for the past 20 years?

Asking for a friend.

"For your own safety"

Sits behind a bush in a quiet leafy suburb, catching gramma as she stops but her front wheels are over the line.

This sure was a lesson in road safety.

Wait till you see Dirtbin and the GTI drivers.
