South Africa's shocking ICT skills ranking

Quality of math & science education – 143 out of 144

Second to last in the world... well why am I not surprised. Because we can see the lack of BASIC maths in everyday decision making by almost everybody. Over and over. If you know any maths you have a major advantage over all the other idiots in the this country who go on making the dumbest decisions on a day to day basis.

Anything that requires math and science will never be a big hit in SA. By far the majority of SA'ns don't want to get into maths and science ... at all. They like social science and similar. Everyone wants to be a lawyer ... or the Boss (as long as the Boss job requires no maths or science). Where I work the maths get delegated until it hits a person that can do it.

It is shocking to see what passes as an "IT Expert", "System Administrator" or "Software Engineer" these days...

Anybody can be given a title.

Have you had a look at the 400+ page report? Here (7.93MB).

I think article heading is a little misleading. It doesn't test ICT skills. It infers the skills by looking at Quality of the educational system, Quality of math and science education, Secondary enrollment rate and Adult literacy rate. And these are from opinion polls and other reports.

Not everybody goes into ICT, but those who do probably have a higher level of education than the rest/average of the country. We have some very clever ICT people... but there are also some very 'unclever' ones.

In my opinion, the "shocking ICT skills" title could well have been "shocking medical skills" or "shocking accountancy skills".

Tertiary system is quite excellent in this country, the problem is the schooling...its pathetic.

As a son of a teacher, I can tell you that the schooling could be better if the salaries weren't so bad. The teachers themselves do not feel motivated to work for pennies. Some of the teachers are single parents. Why doesnt the government put more weight behind one of the most basic tried and tested ways to boost the economy with education. You cant expect a retarded country to become richer.

SA is full of brain donors yes
Everyone wants to be a lawyer, a salesperson, a website surfer, boss, and project manager

And that's why I earn a comfortable income, because I can do math and engineering and all the difficult graft that goes with it.
Within the next 5 years I predict I will have a comfortable retirement at the rate things are going.
All the clever peoples in my industry have left SA and turned their back on SA, so I get all the work to do.
And I teach Zimbabweans how to do it, rather than the locals who are always lazy and looking for time off work and have 1000+ excuses such as funeral, transport, puza, "stress", and thousands of other well-worn excuses.
