South Africa's sub-R1 million plug-in hybrid round-up

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are taking South Africa by storm in 2025, with several new models priced much lower than what was on offer in the past few years.

PHEVs combine the low-cost and zero-emission benefits of fully electric vehicles (EVs) in city driving with the longer range offered by a petrol tank.

PHEV's are an interesting middle-ground. Probably will be populare for some time to come.

I think we also need to differentiate between PHEV's and Pgenerating-HEV's - because some of those petrol engines are tiny and really just there to recharge the batteries. Whereas others are actually integrated into the drive-train and combined outputs.

Now I'm just waiting for an Audi PHEV...

It should be noted that the sharks performance figures are peak power output which reduces quite a lot after a few minutes so when you need power over a long time like towing a caravan up a long hill, you might not get to the other side.

Generally it's regarded that for any (unbiased) Shark reviews/comparisons Paul is your guy.

I predict that the Rav will outsell the Haval for no other reason than the logo on the nose. Literally no rational reason.
The European manufacturers are fast losing the race.

It looks like I need to link my 2nd fav Aussie channel in here.

I doubt that strongly.

Purely because we hardly see the normals Ravs on the road and beyond the Rav I would have expected to see far more Crosses as well but they are actually few and far between.

The Havals are murdering that market segment and I don’t see that changing much with the going PHEV.

What will be far more interesting to see is what will happen with the bakkie side of things and the Shark which is relatively unknown to SA.

I see tons of Crosses all the time, potentially as often as I see Haval actually

RAV4 on paper makes a lot of sense, until you drive one, think another member posted not that long ago that he had one for a while and exchanged it because it is a "soulless vehicle" ... couldn't agree more, it just screams boring and mundane at you all day long

doesn't surprise me they don't sell that well despite being from the ever popular Toyota stable, they also got damn expensive for what they are

I mean it’s very anecdotal for sure.

It’s not that I mean there aren’t crosses around I do see them but I feel the Havals are far more prevalent.

RAV I see the old ones plenty but I’ve maybe see a handful of new ones at best.
