SpaceX starlink in South Africa

That's a misquote of note.
What he's saying is that you're eliminating ground stations (repeaters) along the way and it's travelling through space which is 40% faster than through fibre... but that's only for the inter satellite comms, and nothing to do with the radio comms to and from the satellite which is the bigger bottleneck when compared with terrestrial fibre.
Musk is not saying Starlink will be 40% faster than terrestrial fibre.
Except he did it all deliberately. He knows most people will not know enough to interpret what he says correctly. It is disgusting when people who know this stuff do this intentionally to push an agenda.

And besides, it is not 40% either. Even the basic physical facts are not correct in that statement.

Have to agree. My son (the average gamer) knows nothing about how the data gets to his Xbox and even less about sat links but he knows one important word, PING, which he normally spells Uuurgghh. To him, that statement is a godsend. In his mind = 400ms - 40% = 240ms

You should see the amount of gamers that think we're going to get Starlink and then magically have <100ms to the EU.
I was one of those, until I was educated that the Starlink doesnt do long haul, Just from user >Sat > Ground station > Internet. so from JHB on Fibre I get around 168ms to UK. Starlink may get around 180 odd ms or there about as I get a Latency currently around 2 -3ms local JHB traffic with Starlink local latency seems to be around 20ms to same City.

So came across this... Very cool cannot wait for this to roll out

It can do long haul in the future, but there are caveats.

Eh no. It's twitter, what did you expect?

Seems the time frame for Starlink launching in South Africa has slipped to 2023. Just checked their site and it now says 2023 instead of 2022 like it used to.

The repeating story of all the previous LEO systems. Lots of over-promises, then delay after delay .........

This one is squarely on our Regulator.

I'd actually say that Starlink hasn't overpromised. There are a ton of people worldwide that are quite happy with it, and they have been rolling out to new countries at a fast pace.

I suspect Nigeria is going to be the first sub saharan african country with Starlink, as their regulator recently approved the licence (for 6 years). Ours is still uming and ahing, hence the delay.
Blame it squarely on our government.

Example Rollout Confirmed for [insert country here]:
Starlink is now serving all of Ireland!
And now France | as of yesterday…
Starlink now available everywhere in Germany. Just got the email.
Starlink serving now all Belgium
Starlink now serving all of Austria as well!
Starlink is now serving all of the Netherlands!
Starlink is now available in Czech Republic
Starlink Now Serving Poland! Got the email minutes ago. Excited!

[there are more, didn't bother looking further on reddit starlink group]

Quite a cool map showing global satellite positions here, as well as country cells - https://satellitemap.space/#

Here is whats overhead in SA as of time of posting

Another one showing satellite coverage for our region; we already have several birds overhead that would provide countrywide coverage at any point in time.

Issue is no uplink, and no ICASA approval...

Interestingly, if I check my pre-order, the date on that page hasn't been updated.
Still says "Starlink is targeting coverage in your area in 2022."

Might get lucky.

It could also be due to all the supply chain shortages. I think they have like 500k preorders in the USA alone. That's a lot of chips required for the dishes etc.

Really hope it gets moved back to 2022. Either that or Fixed LTE gets more promising with the recent drop in price.

I suspect will be 2023, given that ICASA is involved, and BEE requirements are to be enforced.

SARS will probably also add a chunk of vat on top of the price too, like they do for internet stuff.

Calling those who have pre-ordered Starlink in South Africa. Has anybody checked whether their arrival dates have changed or remained the same?

Starlink is targeting coverage in your area in 2022.

Still says 2022 for me, but if I search it shows 2023. If it changes to 2023 on the portal I'll just cancel my pre-order. Kind of defeats the purpose
