Spar launching online delivery service — and it will face stiff competition

Spar South Africa has announced that it will be launching an online shopping and delivery platform in selected Johannesburg stores towards the end of March 2022.

Dubbed Spar2U, Spar Group Limited has said that the new platform “will enhance the Group’s ability to assist retailers in driving improved consumer service and engagement going forward”.

Spar has far fewer stores than Checkers and PnP. They need to up their physical presence in order to compete...

Perhaps near you, but here where I stay, there are 4 Spars in a 5km radius. There are 2 pnps and 2 checkers.
In fact google indicates over 2000 Spars, 1600 Pnps and under 300 Checkers stores so it seems Spars do have more stores.

I'd say there's as many Spar stores as there are PnP and Checkers combined. Sure there are very few Spar branches in malls though.

The problem is that Spar is a franchise chain whereas all Checkers and the vast majority PnPs are owned by their respective companies directly

That would be true with PnP being the majority with 80% of that total.

Could be there's not many in the south. But even then I only ever see Kwik Spars. The bigger ones seem to be in the malls rather than shopping centres...

It will face stiff competition. This plebeian will choose Checkers over Spar. Their prices are much more reasonable.

Well if your order fresh stuff, like bread or whatever, and they give you fresh stuff that would be the winner.
Order bread from checkers and you'll get the oldest they have. I dont order perishables from checkers anymore.

Here where I live I have as many churches as there are retirement homes, as many retirement homes as there are bars and as many Spars as there are bars.

I just did and got a fresh loaf of bread and rolls, the bread was just made the crust was still crunchy, cut a slice straight away and slapped some butter on it.

Those Retirement villages would have more churches, I mean you are closer to their usages.

MMMMM. Food Lovers Market.

Agree with you there.
Yeah they do have some good stuff, I've not bought from them in awhile though as they are always so busy and I've been using delivery services a lot.

I really don't understand the obsession with Food lovers market. I get much better quality and fresher fruit and vegetables from P&P hyper.
And their cooked food is the worst I have ever tasted. It always looks amazing but taste meh. The few times I bought cooked food from them I could not understand how they can mess it up that bad. I understand something does not have to be amazing like maybe a great restaurant, but man theirs are bad, not even average.
