So it is vacation time and we're enjoying ourselves here in Stilbaai. Part of the vacation entails food! Some potato salad always goes quite nicely with the braaivleis so we went on a shopping spree on Saturday. Check the prices for a normal 10KG pocket of potatoes...

but how the hell did it get from R29 to R63 ???? that is a 200%+ jump, much higher than the regular inflation increase.

people tend to forget... Them taters were planted when we had fuel prices heading for R11/l
those farmers have to recover the costs from somewhere. Spar and co has to add their obscene profit margins... so they end up taking it from your hide.

Another factor would be the holidays. Nobody delivering potatoes at the markets. Artificial shortage... Supply and demand..

Price should start going down now that fuel dropped and the holidays are over

owner from the one housewife's market where I buy most of my fruit said to me that if I could go for a motnh without certain (pricey) fruit/veg, then I must do so. As the price will drop towards the end of the month. It has been upped due to xmas holidays

or plant your own. unfortunately, we were away when my potatoes needed to be harvested, and then worms got into them.

Tomatoes are also overpriced: bought about 8 tomatoes and it was R18!! Luckily I have some in my own garden, and I am now starting to harvest them. Gonna plant new tomato seedlings in this week also

Hopefully us as consumers will start standing up for our rights. The petrol price goes down, interest rates are set to decrease ..... and consumer goods? Nope! No reduction in price.

We should start boycotting the stores who do not reduce their prices.
