Spoken like a true capitalist.

Hopefully us as consumers will start standing up for our rights. The petrol price goes down, interest rates are set to decrease ..... and consumer goods? Nope! No reduction in price.

We should start boycotting the stores who do not reduce their prices.

Maybe if they lower prices and make less profit they have to layoff more people due to the tighter economic climate and thus less people overall can buy stuff and its a self perpetuating cycle of mayhem and misery.

No, that will not be necessary, because the economy is picking up again. The shops are just stubborn and greedy in not reducing prices.

Spar does seem to change their pricing quite erratically, I've noticed it with tomatoes as well. And that doesn't even mean that all the Spars have the same price for the same product!

So it is vacation time and we're enjoying ourselves here in Stilbaai. Part of the vacation entails food! Some potato salad always goes quite nicely with the braaivleis so we went on a shopping spree on Saturday. Check the prices for a normal 7? KG pocket of potatoes...

R63 @ OK Foods
R55 @ Spar

Nee my broer, something ain't right here. So we went back today hoping that the price would be lower...

R63 @ OK Foods
R64 @ Spar

What on earth is going on here? This ain't daylight robbery imo, this is shameless daylight raping!

On holiday it is difficult, but at home i have my own veggie garden because of this.
We all know it's because they cave the farms to incompetent people that thought farming was sitting on your behind.
Like My friend Trevor said, it’s time the people on these farms start becoming an asset to our country.

And what makes me more dem@er in is the fact that food prices is upwards sticky and will not be coming down as the fuel price is coming down.

Spar here in Ramsgate also take their chances every now and then, so much so that I scoot and sometimes WALK 3 km's (1,5km's from spar to checkers and back) further to checkers.
The only thing I buy at SPAR is milk and bread, and sometimes the milk passes the R15 mark for 2L, and I leave the bread in the milk fridge and head for checkers.

On my parents farm in Piet Retief one of the crops they plant are potatoes. During December they were selling them on the farm at the following prices for 10kg bags:

Large Potatoes R45/bag
Medium Potatoes R38/bag
Small Potatoes R32/bag

From there on normal market conditions prevail and everyone starts adding their margins...R60+/bag is still ridiculous though.

Well, this month i'll start growing my own potatoes, using old tyres stacked atop each other. My best friend has been using this method for ages, and has pocketed quite a few... ermm... pockets.

You could check out this link for more info, but should you need potatoes before your crop is ready, you'll need to visit the corner store, i'm afraid.

I spoke to a shelf packer at Spar in Port Edward the first week of December and he said that he changes the price tags on the shelves every week.

@Fruit & Veg: My parents bought a 10kg pocket of potatoes for R19.95 four weeks back. I bought the same 10kg yesterday for R60.

Its just depressing...

With the new and upcoming consumer act the price has to be physically put on the product before they sell. That should help. Now they can't just replace the little insert on the shelf.

What for?

Aren't the retailers just going to use this as another "extra cost" reason to jack up their prices?
Job creation maybe?

What's the difference between a price on the item and a price on the shelf?

I hope there is more to the legislation than this pointless exercise.

While studying I worked as a shelf packer at Checkers in the early 90's and back then we priced every item still. We had those price "guns" and it wouldn't take us long to change e.g. a whole shelf of tinned baked beans.... come in an hour before the shop opens, pack all the cans on the floor and price-gun away....... new price :D
