The one positive spinoff of all the increases in food and utility costs is that we've been forced to economise, dine out less often, and yes, to start growing our own veggies. It's really not a bad outdoors activity, especially if you have younger kids who take an interest.

we went to a grocer one weekend and the 7kg was about R39 then the following week it was R49 or there abouts. we often used to go to a warehouse near epping market and buy our 10kg bag for R20 or R25 you could also get 10kg bags for R5 but they are as small as peanuts.

The only problem is I live on something thats little more than a glorified sand dune. Not the best growing conditions esp when coupled with nice salty air.

R27.49 at PNP

And R91,49 for basmati
R219,90 for their savoury rice, garlic and herb rice, spanish rice, beef and veg rice, raisin rice, mushroom rice,
R84,00 for sushi rice
R111,92 for Tilda Mushroom rice

Ludicrous!

@Everyone - Prices I quoted in the first post are for the 10KG potatoes, not 7KG. We imported a cheaper (~R55) pocket of potatoes via friends that came through from the cape today.

Thanks! Was a random question hehe but the missus asked me to post it. We've not been back to SA for some years but she reckons thats not bad at all...

Strange you should ask that. The price of rice also went sky high rather recently!

Prices at Spar have normalized a bit now...

Peaches went for R19.95/KG last week, now they are R9.95/KG.
The price of potatoes went down to R54.95 per 10KG pocket.

Other random prices:
Bananas R7.95/KG
Cucumber R5.95
Coke R12.95/2l
R28.95/2KG Weird Chinese? Rice
