Probably be better to buy your own frames somewhere else then for cheap or online and then get them fitted by them

They still charge you R450 to R750 (last I checked) per lens.
 
Well she only bought/ordered in July, but because her eye test was done at the end of June they wouldn't give it.

She only looked at the different glasses before July so technically she should have gotten the special.
Your statement was "decided on pair of glasses before the start of July". If they used the payment date then we'd have another set of people complaining that even though they selected theirs during July they weren't given the special price because they only paid in August.

May have selected but didnt finalise till after July started so if I chose glasses beforehand which I did a while back to see how they look they would hold me to that date instead of the finalisation date when I decide to go ahead with it.

So I went this morning for my eye test and specs. This is what I got:

Eye test and consultation: R335
Frame: R1882
Anti glare lenses: R1067

Total: R3284

I paid R1402. Nice deal although I have to wait 7 - 10 work days for the specs.

Thanks. Think i'll go too. Just need to see if my medical plan includes eye tests.

Edit : they don't. Meh, who needs 20/20 vision anyway.

Wish there was something in the CPA act to stop them from making a quick buck instead of informing customers of the specials even Vodacon informed us of their special coming out in June and said we should wait than upgrade now (May).

#1 ) Buyers remorse is a bitch and we don't need anymore nanny laws because of bad decisions we made.

#2 ) And anybody who supports Specsavers must not complain, teach you all to use a proper optom next time. (And I always find it cheaper to go to independents)

That complaint was from a friend of mine. He ended up buying a superior set at an independent optom.

oh ok and she usually uses Mofatt for her glasses but she thought she might as well try specsavers out :p

Are the specials on contacts as well?

Unfortunately, life sucks. Specsavers is chain store, so the chances of them being sympathetic to your plight and helping you out with here is slim to none at all. An independent optometrist might have given you the discounted price. That said, I don't think Specsavers is in the wrong here. They have absolutely no obligation to inform you of specials before the starting date. Doing so might actually be harmful to the business, seeing as if they did it in this case, they would likely have seen vastly reduced business in the weeks leading up to the sale.

Also, please ichigo, can you just start using commas? Your posts are incredibly hard to read due to your lack of punctuation. If the comma button on your keyboard is broken, simply copy and paste commas from other people's posts.

I agree with you Zewp, that would not make good business sense.

In fact, when I went on Thursday past, they did not inform me of the special deal on frames either. The assistant helped me deciding on a frame and then worked out the quote with lenses etc. Only during that time did I ask her about a frame special advertised on their website (obviously I made sure the one I picked fell in that particular category).

So maybe the staff are told not to mention the special unless the customer asks about it. Who knows, right?

We did actually ask and they said nothing is happening in July :p
 
The frames they sell for R800+ they usually get for R150 to R250 (there are exceptions).

Wholesale frame cost prices are far lower than that. Once they reach your optometrist they tend to land at anything from R30+. But as you say there are exceptions. We can source even cheaper frames without too much trouble, but then we sit with stuff that are seriously dodge from a quality point of view. Eg. we have distanced ourselves from quite a few frame 'brands' and lens labs as the failure rate (or nuisance factor) associated with some of them were just too high and did not warrant the lower cost price we were getting. In the end you might even see these cheaper frames retailing for higher prices as the practice needs to factor this into their cost.

As long as you know what to look out for then this is a good option. We look at quite a few factors when helping you with a frame choice. Make sure that the frame you do go for in the end suits the application: Complications can arise if you want to fit proper multifocal lenses into a frame that is eg. only 2cm deep.

Hate the freaking pricing they add though.
You pay R4.5K, it costs them around R500 to make.
The uncut lenses cost them about R50 to R150 ea (excl multi-focal).

Yep, lenses can be cheap to make. Some labs charge as low as R10/lens or as expensive as R3000+ per lens - it all depends on what lens will be the best fit and pairing for what the client needs in the end and the quality you expect from the lenses. The "cost to make the lenses" alone is unfortunately not a realistic view with regards to the actual total cost for the practice though. We run through like a crazy amount of money a month (can give you a figure if I sat down and worked it out properly) without even opening the doors for the month. The folk in the big malls are even worse off with their crazy monthly rent.

I don't know, I think if a special is currently running they're not necessarily obliged to inform you of it, but doing so would be considering good manners. Then again, sometimes the staff might be pre-occupied or they simply forget, then they forget to tell you about it.

Telling customers of an impending sale in advance is definitely not necessary, though.
