Spectre of an online content censor looms

Good luck to the FPB on this front.
They can't even do their current job properly.

This is what it is all about:

The draft policy requires that anyone who wants to distribute a film, game or certain publications online will have to apply for an online distribution agreement. A prescribed fee, determined by the minister, will be imposed and, after payment, the distributor can classify content on behalf of the board by using its classification guidelines and those of the FPB Act.

Nothing to do with protecting children and this or that ****. It is all about making money.

Next thing, we will need to make use of proxies and other circumvention methods to access and use sites like Youtube, etc.

Are the online content distributors NOT based in South Africa even going to bother with this?

Of course they won't...
Hell the online content distributors in this country won't even bother with this either, they'll just distribute the content to overseas servers.

So it's not about teh poor children after all...

Business as usual for these f**ktards then. Collect fees and... No, that's it, collect fees. Where do I sign up to tell the FPB to go drown themselves in a sewer?

Yes, that is why zuma has not been to parliament.

He and his corrupt cadres figured out how much money that could make from Youtube content alone. They all probably sat in a shack somewhere, with KFC chicken on their laps, counting all SA videos on Youtube.

They probably tried doing some maths to try and estimate how much extra they could make. Then, they obviously needed to fight over who will get what share, what will go to nkandla, who will get what under the table, which cadres will be involved in getting a share with this scam, etc.

So, yes, this is a lot of work... not much time for running the country.

Ye, according to them they are blocking SA users.

Job done, have a nice day.

The FPB logo must also be prominently displayed.

...

This includes online content distributors, for which a fee of up to R750 000, to be determined by the board, is payable.

...

“In all classification decisions for digital content, the online distributor must ensure that the board’s classification decision and logo is conspicuously displayed on the landing page of the website, the website catalogue of the online distributor’s landing page of the website, at the point of sale and during the streaming of the digital content,” the document states.

It will apply to anyone who distributes or exhibits online any film or game and certain publications in South Africa, including online distributors of digital film, games and certain publications, both locally and internationally.

The FPB is opting to be a business, this policy is to establish a cash cow. You need to pay in order to advertise the FPB, unethical twits.

I feel a Torrents for the win cumming on...

They're trying... they will fail incredibly hard though.

I think the same approach was taken when they decided Etolls are a good idea. Except they counted cars on the highways instead of videos on Youtube.

I can just imagine Youtube's/Google's response to some grubby African wannabe dictator demanding that they pay, lol! :D

thanks, you just cleared something up for me. i was wondering how the FPB could police this if the content was hosted outside of south african borders.

They could contact foreign companies which distribute content to South Africans. These would if they're not willing to register their content then be obliged to block South African credit cards, addresses, IP addresses, PayPal accounts, etc. I guess they'd try that. Hopefully foreign service providers would ignore them but who knows.

Don't these people consult before they make announcements?
