I've got finally my fibre line from Cool Ideas, 100Mbps up- and download. But I have a lot of speed and trace issues.

There is either something wrong with your router or your physical line. 10ms on first fibre hop is insane.

Yeah, that first hop latency is pretty bad.

The BBC traceroute results are expected; the UDP traffic is being filtered after the 7th hop (216.66.80.169) there so it does not complete. If your traceroute supports -T or --tcp you should be able to get a complete trace using that.

My speedtest results (Cool Ideas on Vumatel, 100/100 same as you):
Code:
mithrandi@lorien ~> speedtest-cli --server 1817
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Cool Ideas Service Provider (Pty) Ltd (155.93.130.43)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by MWEB Connect (Johannesburg) [8.39 km]: 2.485 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 88.52 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed....................................................................................................
Upload: 92.04 Mbit/s

(Currently have 5-10 Mbps of other traffic on my network, so that result could have been higher without those)

Code:
mithrandi@lorien ~> speedtest-cli --server 2789
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Cool Ideas Service Provider (Pty) Ltd (155.93.130.43)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Vodafone UK (London) [9061.70 km]: 195.556 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 59.95 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed....................................................................................................
Upload: 11.18 Mbit/s

The speedtest result to Vodafone UK is a bit surprisingly poor; looking at https://www.cisp.co.za/graphs/transit_hourly.png it seems like Cool Ideas may be having some trouble on their international upstream (the graph weirdly flattens out at about 1 Gbps for International + Intl Peers, which seems strange, although it could just be a glitch in the stats collection).

EDIT: I can't read graphs, apparently; fixed numbers.

Here's what my first hop latency looks like, for comparison:

Code:
--- 154.0.4.1 ping statistics ---
50 packets transmitted, 50 received, 0% packet loss, time 49830ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.823/1.099/10.799/1.387 ms

Okay, the Cool Ideas graph seems to be back to normal now.

I'm not very familiar with speedtest-cli, but it seems to be reporting average speed rather than "terminal" speed like the web version does; this means that for a speedtest to somewhere far away, the period of time at the beginning of the test where the window is still scaling up drags the average down resulting in a much worse result than expected. Additionally, upload speeds to the Vodafone UK server seem to be heavily limited for some reason (I'm maxing out at about 8 Mbps in the web test, but doing my own upload test to a server in London easily gets me over 70 Mbps).

You might want to try http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest which records the whole graph over the speedtest so you can visually assess the result more easily.

I forgot to ask, which city are you in? I don't know where Cool Ideas have POPs, so if that first hop is backhauled from Durban to Johannesburg or something like that, a higher latency would be expected.

Morning, thanks for the help.

I just did an mtr to bbc:

mtr --report bbc.co.uk

12.|-- 212.58.246.78 0.0% 10 164.8 162.0 161.5 164.8 1.0

still the same. The speed result of dslreports: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/14895786

Looks better, but that's probably because it's early in the morning.

And I'm in Joburg, Northcliff.

BTW, the first hop looks good on my Windows 10 machine, but looks bad on Ubuntu. But the speed is on both machines more or less the same.

A speedtest I just did for comparison: https://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/14899177 (Upload isn't fantastic, but still looking a lot better than yours)

I can't think of any reason you would randomly be getting an extra 10ms on Ubuntu only (from your initial traceroute, it's not just the first hop but everything beyond it), so that's kinda weird.

If you go to https://shop.vumatel.co.za/ and do the speed test there, what sort of results do you get?

Yeah had issues with the WACS capacity last night, as we were switching upstreams it was resolved. But everything is back to normal.

Sorry for the delay in response to this, was away for a day or two :(
