I don't know if this is general thing, but I noticed my speed around 100-120kbps this morning at 07h00, by 07h20 it had dropped down to around 50kpbs. But this evening I'm seeing 120kbps+ on p2p.

/begging on
please, oh please stay like this!!
/begging off

MW128, Tower 50 (Northpark Plaza), Signal:19%,S-N-L: 8, BER: 57% (with homemade parabolic reflector...now where did I put the tinfoil?) [;)]

I had the briefest inkling of what the service can do after Linksfield went off and came back on about 12:15 this afternoon.

File Size: 150.005 KB
Time Elapsed: 9.55 seconds
125.68 Kbps !!!!!!!!
(15.71 KBps)

Now, this evening chugging along at one tenth of that:
19-07-04 8:25:30 PM
File Size: 150.005 KB
Time Elapsed: 97.93 seconds
12.24 Kbps
(1.53 KBps)

I noticed something similar after the 12ish disconnect session. In my opinion the only reason for the brief speed increase is due to the fact that most of the user users on the same tower hadn't reconnected yet.

I base that on the following:
1) Default reconnect settings on the Mywireless software from Sentech does <=5 reties.
2) Speed gradually returned to Sentechs "normal" levels
3) During the day quite a few people leave downloads running at home ... these were interupted until the modems got reconnected.

Hey, I could be talking utter BS ... but so far things add up.

Invetiable, you must be mad mate.

Code:
--14:37:56-- http://tucows.is.co.za/files4/DCPlusPlus-0.241.exe
           => `DCPlusPlus-0.241.exe.90'
Resolving tucows.is.co.za... done.
Connecting to tucows.is.co.za[196.4.160.77]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 2,044,011 [application/octet-stream]

2% [> ] 49,050 2.40K/s ETA 13:32

They're just doing the spindoctor thing. And as always the service is good, or bad depending on the time of day, the phase of the moon, and the amount of dangleberries on Raath's ass.

I got 7k earlier this morning, for about an hour. It's back to it's usual crappy self. And the crappy self, is the RULE.

I have always assumed that the lost packets are caused by the connection between the modem and the tower. These lost packets seem to be the cause for the slowdown in speed (so called "backing off"). What I don't understand is why this only effects http downloads and not multi-thread downloads like P2P (I've been using Gnutella/Bearshare and have consistent downloads at 100-120kbps, and uploads at a *constant* 60Kbps which is the limit that I set.)

This actually irritates me 'cos I don't use P2P as a rule, the reason I got MyWi was mainly for browsing and research for my studies, and this usually means downloading via http.

Inevitable, there are DEFINITELY times where it works nicely for a few minutes here and there. The point is that the bad parts are getting more and more thus diminishing the amount of good times. What Im saying is that you will get spikes of good speed (as you keep mentioning) but overall the average is pretty bad. Thats the problem. We want a usable average, not only when it suits Sentech or Murphy or whoever. Like ADSL it must be usable at all times. This means AT LEAST (the bare minimum) 50% package speed overall and at least 50% on a single thread at any given time of the day.

Please tell me you are getting 10+KB/sec on one single thread. I will be very impressed and so will other forumites and MyWi users since thats pretty rare if at all possible.

Actually arf, the backing off effect is still happening on your 'multi-threaded' downloads. It's just that the multiple download paths tend to have a equalisation effect. If you were to monitor the throughput of each individual connection you'd notice that it varies wildly during downloads.
