Ignoring red lights and stop streets, overtaking where it isn't safe are far serious than speeding, but revenue gathering by camera is a big business worldwide. Making money comes first so the cameras will almost always be placed where they are expected to make the most money. These cameras are profitable where a patrol officer is an expense. There have even been reported incidents overseas where the authorities were found to be tweaking the light's orange times so they could increase revenue.

Iits not as if the traffic cops obey their own laws, I bet we have all seen metro cops in JHB jabbering on cell phones without seatbelts, turning without indicators, driving like maniacs because they are late for lunch..... etc. You cannot enforce laws that you do not obey yourself.

Yes, I think this sums it up nicely :

Don't do as I do, do what I tell you to do.

Think that is the Metro Cops' unofficial code....

I dont think I've ever seen a metro cop wearing a seatbelt.

A bunch of toddlers on tricycles could do a better job of actually policing and enforcing road issues than these types who sit under a tree all day doing sod all apart from occasionally waving a finger at a taxi.

Comming back from the airport the other day past Tembisa I saw a road block set up quickly about 100ms infront of me, a cop stands on the road and flags down a taxi which simply drives around him and continues on it;s merry way. What does the cop do? Nada. This is why no one bothers to abide by the rules on the road. No one else does, so why should we?

Personally I would be extactic if all the taxi's were to suddenly cease to be.

Mucho thanks for reiterating my initial point... :p

As a fellow motorist/traffic sufferer my knee-jerk response is to agree whole-heartedly with you. But that's not all there is to it: don't forget it's been the governments of the last how many DECADES (much less years) failing to address decent public transportation that has resulted in the road-vermin that is the minibus taxi driver. And don't forget that their passengers are even more hostage to their nefarious ways than you are in your own car!

What would happen if everyone started driving the speed limits?
Would the traffic departments have a financial crisis and need to lay off surplus staff?

They would start writing tickets for brake lights only coming on when a person brakes. Or left indicators show right when looking at the vehicle from the front.
Or driver not present when parked.
