Agree with post.

And solution for access of premises (opening of a gate) by armed response employees, like this thread is about?
Get one that allows you to set a security company code. Like alarms have maid pins. And auditable - it obviously doesn't help if the security company leaks it and you're killed.

You need to prove he was threatening you and/or your baby's life.
Some people don't get away ;)
"Fortunately" the crimes in SA have become so violent that it becomes easier to convince a judge that anyone in your house in the middle of the night is a threat to you and your family.

Just don't do anything stupid like shooting them as they drive away, or in their back as they are running.

Wait, what? ADT has their client's keypad pin-codes stored in a database somewhere!?

How is my pin-code any of their business? Security 101: never give anyone your access credentials - no matter how good the intentions are.

Nevermind, our security company asked for a remote:ROFL::ROFL:

I suppose it depends on your particular physical security barriers. They can hop the wall if needed. I've seen them carry ladders. Or have a different code for the access gate? But then you need garden beams to pre-warn you if you are at home.

And that is what this OP is about.

Some providers have physical keys for the pedestrian gate padlocks/locks. Prefer the keypad system, as least there is an audit trail, physical keys have none of that.

The best way to protect yourself right now is by using your passport.
Or you could always rent property next to a convicted racist so the cops will come and visit periodically... then again, after my experiences with cops this year I'd much rather take on the criminal without the uniform.

It's an amazing country.
So beautiful.

Maybe camera with the ability to open the door remotely? So you give specific access. You'd need a "smart" home system, so e.g. Google Nest which revamped pricing to be $6/month for all connected cameras with a month footage if detected, or an extra 2 dollars or something if always on for 24/7 footage.

Alerts if unrecognized face.

It's all quite a bit of work though, and usually costly, plus you'll probably need fiber due to upload.

the security industry pays so poorly , so it very easy for security guards etc to be paid off by criminals ...

I haven't installed a keypad with pin for entry to our property for our armed response as I am still undecided whether to or not. I will definitely not give them any keys or remotes to provide access to our property, access via pin code was learnt as a method to gain access after keys provided to armed response companies were used. I spec'd our alarm, electric fence and CCTv although we used an alarm specialist to do the install of the alarm and electric fence and I installed the CCTv which I am still expanding. Our armed response has been great and has excellent presence in the area with well trained crews and equipped vehicles but support from other armed response companies has been offered from time to time. Various forms of crime are a big issue in our area, so we have to remain vigilant at all times.

Yup. Years ago had Trellidor come to one of our houses for a quote to add burglar bars in front of the windows. Got the quote, and a week or two later someone tried to break into the place. Never had a problem before, and it didn't look like they were trying to take anything in anycase.

****ing scum.
Would not surprise me if some other security company had orchestrated, and is complicit with known house robbers, with the aim of offering security service to panicky ex-ADT clients living in Bryanston. Would make for lovely marketing when robberies suddenly vanish from the area after said Security company had moved in.
@xeslaro: You don't know how incredibily accurate this statement is - I've suspected this for a very long time - especially after obtaining (and refusing) a security quote for my house and got targeted within two weeks thereof, as a sort of a "motivation", you know.

Then the same when I moved my warehouse to a new complex (a place that was secure, also within eyesight of the security gate). I had not yet had an alarm fitted for the first three months, yet Lo & Behold, a week after getting quotes from three service providers a break-in! How convenient.

Build your own alarm system. Don't ever get it from the same company that does armed response for you. Don't ever sign up for a 36 month contract with free alarm system. They are useless.

Rather start building your own system from scratch, even a basic system for less than 3 grand and add to it as money is available.

Same, I did my own home. However most people don't have the intelligence for this.

I would think the logical next step is pin and fingerprint. While you are home you should be able to disable both and have a bell with a camera to only allow people in if you recognise them.
I rate it's absolutely worth it to prevent such incidents.

I like the idea of sentry guns like in Alien. Just mount two or 3 around the yard and once activated anything that moves is sent to hell in a fruit basket.

To be fair, some people are intelligent, just not tech savvy. Perhaps intelligent enough to stay away from certain tech

Imagine if the doc who did your brain transplant was dumb ...

Please don't this seriously ...

Go find a law that gives you the right to take an intruder down in your house or on your premises.
He can stand next to your baby's crib at 3am in the morning...you find him there it's expected of you to open a dialogue in the dark and sing khumbaya
This country is SO catering for "certain people"

TL;DR
If you fire warning shots and the intruders continue to advance towards you, it is classed as self-defense.

Full Version:
It's actually easier than this and information given to me by someone who works in crime forensics.

Put 2 shots into the intruder and then fire 2 shots out the room window or into the wall in quick succession.

When it comes down to investigation, you tell them you fired 2 warning shots into the wall and they advanced towards you, so you defended yourself. When they interview the neighbors, the most they can say is they heard 2 shots and then another 2 shots.

In this way, they have no way of proving whether or not you shot the intruder first or the warning shots first.

Alternatively, invest in a paintball gun and pepper balls, they have like a 2m - 3m spread if they explode on a wall or person.
You have more shots in a paintball gun than you do in a normal 9mm. If you empty a round of pepper balls into them or around them, they not going anywhere and you could probably beat the **** out of them and tie them up and call the police.

Personally, I think it would be better to kill it, and let the Cops find the knife that it advanced towards you with, Disobeying repeated warning shots as well as verbal warnings
