Can you advise me on how this works? Is there a way to restore my iphone in order to maintain my warranty?

I assume, and I'm pretty sure of it, like all other Jailbreak's in the past if you just do a restore the stock firmware over a JB patched one, firmware it puts it back as it was out the box/factory so no worry, I've done that a few times (once cause I needed it to go back to Vodacom) so can't see it would be any different.

Works 100% been stuck on 3.1.3 for a while with no JB. You just run it with itunes open, click the button and its jailbroken, nice and simple, takes a minute.

Anyone here with a 3GS 3.1.3 and baseband 05.12.01 who used SpiritJB on MTN?

That's what I also think. But baseband 05.12.01 can't be unlocked. So if my MTN sim does work in it then it means it should work after the Jailbreak because my iPhone is not unlocked.

SA iPhones sourced from Vodacom aren't carrier locked so if you have one of those (or one from another region the same) then you can simply upgrade to 3.1.3 (which will upgrade the baseband) and then JB. I think ....

Quite possible if you bought it in SA... AFAIK: ICASA has made carrier lockdown illegal in this country.

Ok. I tried it and it worked. Or I think so. My iPhone rebooted and it's got Cydia installed. Though they say that doesn't mean that it is Jailbroken. What can I do to find out if it is or not?

If you've got Cydia it's Jailbroken. That means you can install arbitrary software. So try installing something from Cydia. (Flashlight)

Can I only download and install stuff on the iPhone or can I download stuff to my PC and install it from there as well?

Both! To transfer to your iPhone from your PC, you use SSH.

So I can download a application on my PC, transfer it to my iPhone using SSH, and then install it? I'm still new to this. Sorry for the questions.

Thank goodness i backed up. v1 of spirit made me lose all my pictures! I see on iClarified a v2 has been released with the fix not to delete your photos.
