Earl Rose, Bandise Maku & Adi Jacobs need to be punted right out the squad. What have ANY of them done to deserve their spot?

NOTHING....

De Villiers' obviously knows these players better than anyone else...

Other surprises were Griquas’ Davon Raubenheimer, the Bulls’ third-choice hooker Bandise Maku, and former SA Under-19 captain Alistair Hargreaves — players De Villiers worked with at junior level.

It also appears that he is thinking of the future here and not just trying to win immediate matches to keep his job and appease the public. Good man!

The highly rated Maku’s selection may well be to prevent him from signing for the Western Force.

Commenting on the nine new caps, De Villiers said he was looking to not only developing for 2011, but for beyond.

“After 2011 we mustn’t sit and think we could have done this or that,” he said. “We’re looking ahead and don’t want to be caught with our pants down.”

I also like his way of thinking. Country before province.

After flirting with the idea of resting some of his all-conquering seniors, De Villiers opted against it: “I went to see a few of them, but they want to be part of this happy family.

“We’re the number one side and want to stay there. You can’t lead from the back and we want to lead the world.”

De Villiers also had a thinly veiled dig at his provincial counterparts on resting their senior players.

“We’re working with international players here. We can’t play them into the ground at national level and rest them internationally. We must work out how to rest them at national level.”

Keep it up De Villiers. Soon you will have won over all of your critics.

I just hope that if Earl fails on the tour again, P Div will drop him like he dropped rolly polly ricky.

I also rate that due to his successes he deserves some leeway with regards to his selection of 2nd stringers for the tour.

Also glad Ricky is gone. Well, lets see what happens. he is with those guys daily so he "should" know better. I hope if he is taking a gamble it pays off.

I would have Wicus Blaauw or Wian du Preez in for Gurthro and WP Nel for Jannie any day. Gurthro and Jannie have had their chances and have not impressed, our young props on the other hand have been in great form and look very good for the future.

I agree that we should have taken a prop or two extra but lets be honest with john smit and beast there (A black player that actually earned his place and the best SA captain ever) there will not really be space for anyone in the next 2 years.

I would pick Joe Pietersen instead of Zane, though I can see why P Div went with him, as he was the FB in the emerging boks and he is generally solid if not average. Also, I think if Joe were to be picked it would have to be in place of Riaan Viljoen as they are both relatively new players so maybe Zane 'deserves' to be there.

Ask harry viljoen what happens if you pick a person after 2-3 months of good rugby.....

Zane has played a steady couple of seasons....

So if Joe can do the same I will be the first to say "select the percy wannabe :p" but as for now you should not have a guy in your team for playing well for 1 CC season.

(Yes that includes Maku, and davon and even chilliboy)

Januarie was not included because he has a court date....

Im glad heini is there in his place and hope he sements that place. Heini > Januarie

Nice post at the top lance.

I did not know about maku maybe sighning for the WF.

Also I agree why should PdV not pick the players that he feels the safest with.

All SA coaches have had their "favourites". As long as we keep winning and he is actually also making a plan or three for the future I will not complain.

Nice job P. Divvy:D

What do you guys think of Lionel Mapoe?

Brilliant player, should have been selected. I think his SA 7's contract came in the way - is there not a tournament at the same time as the Bok tour?

He is a great player. Not too sure about the 7's contract, I must look into it. Interesting to know.

Not happy with the side, I thought they chose players based on performances from the Currie Cup???

as many already said Earl Rose WTF?

sad not to see Deysel, Doppies La Grange & Jano Vermaak not in the team. although the Lions didnt make it to the semi's those 2 guys were fabulours, 8/10 times La Grange got over the advantage line, he has an excellent step in his game, La Grange is wayyy better than Ricky Pricky so how his name didnt get dished up is confusing! lots of others that make no sense like Chilli boy, they dub him the next Bok captain.....give me a #$%$%@$ break, if they want a black bok Captain, give it to the beast albeit his Zimbabwean, lol.

Also thought Cheetahs wings Fabian Juries & Lionel Mapoe should have got a mention

Think he will stick to making a Flyhalf of Ruan.

We will see how he performs in the week games. Really looking forward to seeing how guys like potgieter, Pienaar, Olivier etc etc will play against some strong weekday opponents.

What does getting a mention mean?

The selectors are limited to a certain number of squad members. Selecting another player would mean dropping someone else. Who would be dropped and why?

It is actually going to be interesting to see what he does here. Does he want Ruan covering as a utility back in the main games or starting as flyhalf in the mid week games? Or perhaps fulfilling both roles? The game time could do him well.

I see he had this to say about the choice of Francois Hougaard

From the list of potential new caps the Bulls’ Hougaard, who was moved from the base of the scrum to the wing during the Currie Cup, crops up as a utility back.

“If you look at how blessed we were with Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn, it never ends,” De Villiers said.

“We’re looking to use him the same way as Ruan and Frans — as a utility back.”

Would make me very happy to have ruan on the bench covering for scrummie and flyhalf.

I feel that way we can free up a spot and add some scrumming power to the bench.

Think Div has spoken about starting RP in the week games at nr 10. Which imo is a good thing as we do not have another flyhalf on tour really barring MS with any "big rugby xp".

I see Ruan is playing at 10 in the first game against Leicester on Friday... and Brussouw is also in the starting team. Does this mean he will not start the first test?

Springbok XV - 15 Earl Rose, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Juan de Jongh, 2 Wynand Olivier, 11 Jongi Nokwe, 10 Ruan Pienaar, 9 Heini Adams, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Danie Rossouw, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle (c), 1 Gurthro Steenkamp.
Subs: 16 Bandise Maku, 17 Heinke van der Merwe, 18 Alistair Hargreaves, 19 Davon Raubenheimer, 20 Francois Hougaard, 21 Meyer Bosman, 22 Riaan Viljoen.

I think Earl is Pieter's "other" child. That's why he's in the squad. :D
