Other surprises were Griquas’ Davon Raubenheimer, the Bulls’ third-choice hooker Bandise Maku, and former SA Under-19 captain Alistair Hargreaves — players De Villiers worked with at junior level.
The highly rated Maku’s selection may well be to prevent him from signing for the Western Force.
Commenting on the nine new caps, De Villiers said he was looking to not only developing for 2011, but for beyond.
“After 2011 we mustn’t sit and think we could have done this or that,” he said. “We’re looking ahead and don’t want to be caught with our pants down.”
After flirting with the idea of resting some of his all-conquering seniors, De Villiers opted against it: “I went to see a few of them, but they want to be part of this happy family.
“We’re the number one side and want to stay there. You can’t lead from the back and we want to lead the world.”
De Villiers also had a thinly veiled dig at his provincial counterparts on resting their senior players.
“We’re working with international players here. We can’t play them into the ground at national level and rest them internationally. We must work out how to rest them at national level.”
I just hope that if Earl fails on the tour again, P Div will drop him like he dropped rolly polly ricky.
I also rate that due to his successes he deserves some leeway with regards to his selection of 2nd stringers for the tour.
I would have Wicus Blaauw or Wian du Preez in for Gurthro and WP Nel for Jannie any day. Gurthro and Jannie have had their chances and have not impressed, our young props on the other hand have been in great form and look very good for the future.
I would pick Joe Pietersen instead of Zane, though I can see why P Div went with him, as he was the FB in the emerging boks and he is generally solid if not average. Also, I think if Joe were to be picked it would have to be in place of Riaan Viljoen as they are both relatively new players so maybe Zane 'deserves' to be there.

What do you guys think of Lionel Mapoe?
Brilliant player, should have been selected. I think his SA 7's contract came in the way - is there not a tournament at the same time as the Bok tour?
Not happy with the side, I thought they chose players based on performances from the Currie Cup???
as many already said Earl Rose WTF?
sad not to see Deysel, Doppies La Grange & Jano Vermaak not in the team. although the Lions didnt make it to the semi's those 2 guys were fabulours, 8/10 times La Grange got over the advantage line, he has an excellent step in his game, La Grange is wayyy better than Ricky Pricky so how his name didnt get dished up is confusing! lots of others that make no sense like Chilli boy, they dub him the next Bok captain.....give me a #$%$%@$ break, if they want a black bok Captain, give it to the beast albeit his Zimbabwean, lol.
ah crap didnt know that, ok then Heini Adams is a good choice, but I wana see if P Diddy plays Ruan as a scrummie or flyhalf
Also thought Cheetahs wings Fabian Juries & Lionel Mapoe should have got a mention
Think he will stick to making a Flyhalf of Ruan.
We will see how he performs in the week games..
From the list of potential new caps the Bulls’ Hougaard, who was moved from the base of the scrum to the wing during the Currie Cup, crops up as a utility back.
“If you look at how blessed we were with Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn, it never ends,” De Villiers said.
“We’re looking to use him the same way as Ruan and Frans — as a utility back.”
It is actually going to be interesting to see what he does here. Does he want Ruan covering as a utility back in the main games or starting as flyhalf in the mid week games? Or perhaps fulfilling both roles? The game time could do him well.
I see he had this to say about the choice of Francois Hougaard
