I'm trying to figure out if I need to do anything regarding registering a new solar install in the Cape Town area, but not on COCT supply. West Coast is all direct Eskom supply so my understanding is that registration with COCT is not required, but do I have to do anything similar with Eskom direct supply?

I've looked on Eskom's site but it's confusing as hell.

TIA

This is Africa indeed. Don't worry about it :p

Okay, the installer just sent me an email clearing this up:

  1. Are you doing every by the book? If yes you have to make application for registration for SSEG with Eskom. Once authorised, we may proceed and install. For this to occur, you require the services of an electrical engineer to sign off your installation, submit SLD and register your home. You will sign a contract with Eskom and your done. The engineer we use, charges R6500 for this and also issues a coc.
  2. If No, you choose just to install and ignore and bylaws, we will install issue a coc for the work done with a clause stating you have been notified of the law requiring you to register to protect ourselves

So the vibe I'm getting from people is that it seems most people don't really care about registering it with Eskom so the installers just cover themselves by adding a clause to their terms. It's just a bit confusing if people don't directly state that yes, you are technically breaking the laws by doing this.

Okay, I'm starting to see why people don't bother with this.

Researching some more, I came across this document: https://www.eskom.co.za/distributio.../EMBEDDED-GENERATION-BROCHURE-FINAL-LR-NC.pdf

It states that in order to have the system registered you need to be on specific time-of-use tariff plans, for residential that would be something called HomeFlex. The only problem is that this tariff doesn't exist.

5.1. Grid tied generation, with no exported power into the grid. • Customers must be on a time of use (TOU) tariff or convert to the relevant TOU tariff when installing embedded generation. • Eskom tariffs applicable are Megaflex and Miniflex (Urban or >22 kV connection), Ruraflex (Rural) or Homeflex . These tariffs charge for consumption using different charges for different TOU periods.

Then there happens to be a little annotation at the bottom of the page for HomeFlex which states: "Future residential TOU tariff to be approved by Nersa, to be mandatory for grid-tied embedded generation."

So ye, I might just get the COC and the retroactively register if Eskom ever gets things together.

Did you ever come right with the process to register with Eskom?

I have an off-grid inverter with batteries.
The inverter is feeding a separate DB or Critical Loads.
Non-Critical loads have remained in original DB.

Wish to install solar panels:
1. Keep batteries charged
2. Reduce my load during the day.

I'm with COCT.
What do I need with regards to paperwork, if anything.
Solar guy will issue COC.

I gave up. The guy I was working with didn't respond to my emails, so I quit while I was ahead. It's also not something I have any clue how to do myself, so I'm just getting the COC and if Eskom ever complains I will register retroactively.

as long as CoC is good your insurance will be good and life will be good .Eskom cant find its nostril with both hands .

Bit of an old thread but did anyone get any further insight? I'm in joburg and looking for someone who could do the registration and eskom compliance doc for me given that this is now a requirement. Doesn't seem like my installer does this (something I wish I had known earlier).

Neighbour is installing at the moment. Installer said they've given up trying to register with Eskom.

I did not. I am an Eskom direct prepaid customer.

Also going through this now, installer advised that I can pay the application fee but that Eskom won’t respond.
