Eskom extends Stage 2 power cuts

Eskom announced on Tuesday evening that it will implement Stage 2 load-shedding on Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 17:00 and running until 05:00 the following morning.

It expects to suspend load-shedding at 05:00 on Friday morning.

Yeah, wouldn't it be great if the power came back on after scheduled LS instead of the whole neighbourhood and surrounds being plunged into a further 20 hours of no 'lectric when they flip that switch.

I'm confused but, isn't load shedding required when we're at our peak usage? factories and offices surely drop power usage a lot after 5pm? How are we at maximum capacity?

Millions of people get home and cook etc. Way more power consumed than sitting in an office.

They want to use the time and capacity to let up on some of their peak generation systems. Too expensive to run.

Peak usage is actually 5am to 9am and 5pm to 10pm. During the day usage can actually be 3GW lower.
The main reason is people wake up, shower, make breakfast and coffee. Then get home and do the same.

Hmm ok. thought factories used more than all the homes combined. Interesting.

They do, but they are base demand, as in they pretty much run 24/7 and they remain roughly the same, as you can't really shutdown things like smelters easily. So even at 2am we're still using about 20GW, during the day this can hit 25GW, but during peak this can be 28GW. During winter this can hit 35GW which it did last year and a few times in 2020.
Even during December the base demand was around 20GW.

Just imagine the schit we would be in if rail services were running as they should.
PRASA is a priority customer and would be consuming vast amounts of power.
