The state won't understand load shedding until they themselves experience load shedding like every ordinary everybody. They are dealing with an impact that don’t impact them daily.

The public has to sustain some people's uptime. Not only are we rotationally disconnected, but those dealing with the issue are also disconnected.

You'd also have to prohibit them from purchasing any type of backup solution. The majority of the top members of the ANC in government are very wealthy, so they'd just install big backup systems otherwise. Just like they pay to send their children to private schools.

That's about nearly half the countries capacity no? Think the figure was around the 50 mark.

Planned maintenance is currently 5,739MW while breakdowns amount to 18,041MW of capacity.

*edit* ok nearly there

How much electricity can South Africa generate?

According to the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, South Africa's total domestic electricity generation capacity is 58,095 megawatts (MW) from all sources.

But that figure is not just Eskom, so its interesting.

What is the power grid?

The grid is made up of three building blocks: generation, transmission and distribution.

Generation consists of power stations (or plants) that generate electricity. Examples of these are the newly built Kusile and Medupi power stations. South Africa has a generation capacity of approximately 58 GW – enough to power 26 million kettles concurrently – mostly made up of Eskom’s coal-burning power plants. Eskom’s share of this is a generation capacity of 44 GW, of which 38 GW is from coal-

If the second bolded part is true, they are at 50%.
powered stations.

I hope this trend continues the whole year. With Eskom asking a 30%+ increase, we all would be in serious trouble if the utility provided uninterrupted electricity. At least with loadshedding, they cannot generate money from something they do not provide.

Actually they provide the same, this is load shifting not shedding

They can provide as much as they want. But, if they are off for 1 hour, that is 1 hour of billed usage gone. They would need to double fees, at least, just to generate the same income they did the time period before. Price increases of 30% actually means nothing to them and they will run into even deeper debt.

May the loadshedding live long!
