Memorial Day, Star Trek and Barrack Obama topped Nielsen’s monthly index of most blogged news stories for May 2009.

This is according to a ten most blogged about topics report recently released by online statistical evaluation firm Nielsen Online.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday held on May 25 to commemorate those who have died while in the military service. “Conversations about Memorial Day ranged from the hottest retail sales during the holiday to plans for the weekend,” said the report.

Second on the list was Star Trek, which can be attributed to the May release of the Star Trek movie, which has earned over $330 million (R2.64 billion) to date.

In response to his recent trip to the Middle East and his widely discussed visit to the University Of Notre Dame in the US Barrack Obama was the third most spoken about topic online in May.

The study also showed that swine flu, which ranked at the top of April’s list, fell to the number 8 position in May. “Bloggers continued to discuss the latest cases and growing number of infected; however, there were also many conversations that discussed how the initial panic surrounding the epidemic was over-inflated and unnecessary,” adds the report.

Nielsen’s Official list for May was:

1) Memorial Day
2) Star Trek
3) Barrack Obama
4) Dick Cheney
5) Notre Dame
6) Cinco de Mayo
7) Mobile Phones
8 ) Flu Virus
9) Sonia Sotomayor
10) Terminator Salvation
