Massive surge in Starlink customers in South Africa

Despite South Africa's telecommunications regulator deeming their use "illegal", well over 14,000 of SpaceX's Starlink kits have been imported into the country in about a year.

MyBroadband spoke to two of the most well-known companies that have made a business of importing and activating Starlink for South Africans — IcasaSePush and Starsat Africa.

Reminds me of Telkom back in the day deeming VOIP to be illegal with us all whispering to one another on TeamSpeak.

That's because they made a killing with their conference calls department .... and TeamSpeak would be the end of that golden egg once everyone knows they can do the same for free. :D

actually hilarious how far behind we are, that even with the totally artificial restrictions, for the ANC enrichment,
people gave them the middle finger and STILL imported the kits.

and Exactly like VOIP being illegal once, and then gradually seeing their rules unenforceable, the ANC had to concede that they are idiots and should never be listened to or their dumb laws followed.

I mean I remember still when Whatsapp calling made the mobile operators (MTN/Vodacom) try to ban it in SA.
we really live in an idiocracy sometimes, as what will they try to ban next? Energy Drinks?

ICASA is absolutely shooting themselves in the foot. Up to now people have complied with their regulations reasonably well, but this case is threatening to erode their authority completely. It will not be good for our economy if people start to ignore the law in general.

Oh my word I remember that. I worked for one of the big banks and they paid hundreds of thousands a month for calls to Telkoms conference servers lol. We felt so fancy calling in. Then you could call in from your cellphone too and claim it back - they just have made a killing

At what angle do these point at the sky here in South Africa? I want to put one on my balcony which has a roof. Does it point at same angle as a dstv dish?

You can’t stop progress by imposing laws that are based on absolutely nothing but your need for bribery and corruption.
The problem is imposing laws your can't enforce.
When Starlink approached ICASA they should have seen this and just accepted it.
Get the Tax money while they are offering it.
