In December I took advantage of their special r389 for the decoder including installation. I had issues trying to organise an installer, mainly due to all the installers not existing anymore. However once installed seems great so far don't feel like I'm really missing out on anything from dstv and only spend r200 pm!

Any favourite channels?

Official Q&A from ODM:

Q & A for Top ONE and Top Movies

Top One and Top Movies

Q. Why does the channel Top One only start at 15:30 .
A. Top TV is gradually building towards a 24hours schedule, for now we are concentrating on Prime Time, giving you the best content that we have at our disposal. This prime time slot gives everyone access to the content at a time when most people are at home and available to watch.
The phasing in of the schedule will be as follows:
Week 1: (May 1 & 2) the channel will start at 16:00 – 00:00
Week: 2 (May 3 – 9) the channel will start at 15:30 – 02:00
Week 3: (May 10 – 16) the channel will start at 15:30 – 02:00
Week 4: (May 17 – 23) the channel will start at 09:30 – 02:00
Week 5: (May 24 – 30) Full 24 hour schedule

Q. Why does the movie channel, Top Movies not run for 24 hours.
A. The nature of a movie channels is to start with fewer hours, but new titles every day. However, as you gather more stock, you can start scheduling a full 24 hour channel. This will normally take 2 – 3 months. Our intention is to start on a full 24 hour schedule in August 2010. The result however, is that you will have more repeats.

Q. Are you going have repeat programming?
A. Yes, repeats form an integral part of any pay television platform or channel – all over the world.
The repeat pattern varies by genre, for example, kids programming will have a higher repeat rate than a reality show.

Q. Why am I paying now, when I am not getting a full 24 hours?
A. Top Movie is not the only movie channel on the Ultimate package but we also have Showtime, Silver and Fox FX.

Q. Will the channel have local content?
A. Yes. It has been proven many times over, that local content is often better appreciated than international content. However at the moment, we have only licensed international and some local programming. In the near we will be commissioning our own programmes.
We already had a locally produced channel as part of our offering, Top Gospel.

Q. Will Top One commission content from the local production sector.
A. Yes we will. We are currently working on our commissioning procedures which will be published on our website in due course.

When I enquired about getting the Topstar Indian package only they refused indicating that one of the english package must be included.I don't if this is still the case.

Last I heard, ICASA was pushed into rescinding their licence, and the BCCSA went to town on them. So no Starsat do not (or are not supposed to be) operating their porn channel/s.

Last i heard of starSat was their application to broadcast porn channels ...does anyone know the outcome of that ?

No, different sats and different inclinations.

Open View HD is now available on the same satellite as DSTV but not TOPTV, and can use the same antenna and LNB IF you have enough LNB ports available. It requires a separate decoder.

DSTV does not offer loop through functionality, so a separate port is required.

StarSat snags exclusive sports rights; new sports channel Star Sports Premium to go live on StarSat before the end of June.

StarSat is currently showing the FIFA under 20 World Cup games until 7 July, live from New Zealand. In August there will be the German Bundesliga. StarTimes secured the broadcasting rights for the next five seasons (2015 - 2020) with nine live matches per day from August.

StarTimes also acquired the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Portugal 2015 for July, as well as the International Champions Club which starts in July and runs to August with teams like LA Galaxy, Barcelona, Real Madrid Chelsea and others.

The FIFA under 17 World Cup Chile will be on StarSat from October to November and the 2018 FIFA World Cup Preliminary Draw on 25 June will also be broadcast.

Boxing fans can see the Glory22 event with boxers from seven countries competing in various weight divisions.

I've just read that they acquired the rights to show the German bundesilga from August for the next 5 years. As I am a bayern supporter I'll have to get this.

How are the rest of the channels? Are the movie channels anything like Dstv's? Don't really want to pay for Dstv and StarSat but if the movie channels are rubbish, I'll have to.

Fewer movie channels...repeats, and Fox Movies just discontinued their agreement with StarSat.

I believe the menu interface on the HD decoder is shyte. You also need a splitter if you want to connect a 2nd TV.

Contemplating getting one but I'm not sure now. I'm already on my 2nd TopTV decoder as the 1st one broke.

If you are allowed to keep the old smart card and they do not deactivate it when doing the swop, I will keep the HD decoder as a spare.

Thanks for feedback and the tip! Hope they don't retain the old smart card. I'll post on fb to see if anyone can shed light on how the swap happens.

Anybody on this thread using the HD decoder yet?
Yes, my old TopTV decoder was giving trouble and this is the replacement.

It comes with a new smart card and you just phone their support no (in the box) and move your subscription over when you're ready to plug it in.

Used it for one month, never renewed again. Better options available online. Hell Youtube offers better content.
