A friend and I are looking into starting up a small clothing company. We plan on importing the items from China (we are looking at using Alibaba to start with to find suppliers) and then selling online, to stores and via word of mouth.

I need some help on exactly what is involved. I'd really appreciate some feedback around the following topics:

  • Do we need to register as a company with SARS?
  • Would we need a separate bank account or could we use a personal account to start with?
  • What import license would we need?
  • I've noticed on the SARS site that one can register as an importer in a personal capacity. If this is possible, would we need to register a company?
  • Could someone run me through the importing process (ordering, bill of lading, clearing at customs etc.)

The selling/marketing side of things I'm fine with, I just need some help with the legalities of getting the goods into the country and then selling them legally.

Thanks in advance :)

Just be aware of the killer import duties on clothing before you go too far
eg Ebay import from UK of 2 pair of camo pants:
Cost of goods + freight = GBP 33.98 + GBP 11.98 = tot - GBP 45.96
Let call that R781.32

Can't find the slip right now but had to pay customs R350ish

Yeah, thanks. I know duties can be a bitch, but that would all be worked into the cost of running the business. I need more info on how to get the stuff into SA and sell it properly ;)

I'm working in retail and all I can say is business to ****ing tough right now... I suggest drawing up a formal business plan before moving forward. It would help identify any weakness in your business....

Why not have it locally manufactured? I am assuming you have branding/idea that you want to put on the shirts?

I will look into local as well, but I don't think the Chinese prices can be beat. $4 for a printed t-shirt (excluding shipping however).
