State of emergency not needed in South Africa yet

President Cyril Ramaphosa will not declare a state of emergency in South Africa.

During an address to the nation on Friday evening, Ramaphosa said that a state of emergency was a last resort if all other efforts to stabilise the country have failed.

He said that the declaration of a State of Emergency would result in the suspension of several Constitutional rights, and that no responsible government would do that lightly.

No responsible government would put it's citizens through plenty that we've seen the last few years

I think its a good move, there was no need for a SOE. its a bad situation, and one no country or govt wants to face especially if it is a confirmed possible economic sabotage/insurrection - but SOE would just be throwing more petrol into a fire we just managed to get down to a hot coal.

Yes, a lot of the deaths could have been prevented with a SoE. Especially since they now agree they were not well prepared.

Over 200 deaths is not something to be glad of. What was Marikana 34?

“It is clear now that the events of the last week were nothing less than a deliberate, coordinated, and well-planned attack on our democracy,” Ramaphosa stated. “The Constitutional order of our country is under threat.”

“These actions are intended to cripple the economy, cause social instability and severely weaken – or even dislodge – the democratic state. Using the pretext of a political grievance, those behind these acts have sought to provoke a popular insurrection,” Ramaphosa said.

“The ensuing chaos is used as a smokescreen to carry out economic sabotage through targeted attacks on trucks, factories, warehouses and other infrastructure necessary for the functioning of our economy and the provision of services to our people.”

“They have sought to exploit the social and economic conditions under which many South Africans live, conditions that have worsened since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, and to provoke citizens and criminals to engage in opportunistic acts of looting,” the president stated.
Everything he said can be summed up in one word, and that word is TREASON.

Zuma and all of his comrades (not just 12) need to be charged with and tried for treason.

No more pussyfooting around Zuma and his faction, no more tolerating Zuma and his many crimes, Zuma and all his comrades need to be charged, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and without the option of bail, and once convicted no option of being paroled, not ever, they must all die in prison.

Avoiding State of Emergency was indeed the right thing to do, sitting on his arse the entire weekend before sending in SANDF to support SAPS was a huge failure only worsened by waiting longer before increasing the numbers of boots on the ground

I've mentioned upon the failure to obtain and act upon criminal intelligence many times on this forum, good and bad people in SAPS and the SANDF. Much of this could have been avoided. It's been an explosion in slow motion.

Don't forget Zuma's vile spawn. They need to be tried for treason as well.

I count Zuma's numerous geriatric ejaculations amongst those of his faction, the whole lot need to be arrested and dealt with.

Zuma's ill gotten Nkandla compound needs to be raided to gather any evidence that may still be there, related to any and all of the crimes Zuma and his faction have committed. Arrest anyone that tries to prevent any of that from happening.

I also expect that whatever imagined or real dirt Zuma has on Ramaphosa and others, will soon be released by the Zuma faction, especially since Zuma's faction are still demanding that Zuma be released within 14 days with an implied "or else".

If there is dirt on Ramaphosa, so be it, he needs to stand his ground regardless, the priority has to be to stabilise the country and deal swiftly and decisively with the entire Zuma faction, no matter what gets flung in his direction.

It's also time for NDZ to get chucked out of the cabinet, she will have a conflict of interest with action planned against her offspring, and should not have the kind of access her position in government gives her. There are several other ministers that also need to get chucked, Don Cele and others.
