So after the biggest spike in demand for internet that the world has ever seen, our telecom companies are claiming losses and cutting jobs? Why does this feel like they are pre-empting the taking back of spectrum.

EDIT: It's only up to 2019. Well, then it's irrelevant isn't it?

They had a good profit margin on phone calls and sms, now calls over whatsapp are becoming a norm, their biggest asset is infrastructure and not much more...

This is possibly a bit of a simplistic view... I would hazard a guess thst there was major infrastructure investment in 2019 that aided in slashing those profit margins.
