Without reading everything, we are looking at moving to New Zealand too. We made the choice after looking at the US of A, Canada, Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia too. Their culture and climate (on the north island) are very similar to ours.
Reason #1: My kids, their education, health and future. (*yes, NZ is directly under the hole in the Ozone)
Reason #2: Standard of living, even on the most basic residency/work visa level far outstrips South Africa. Now add that you do not have to pay for medical aid for kids below 16 or schooling, that saves a huge chunk of disposable income that covers the "higher cost of living" that the doom prophets keep bringing up.
Reason #3: My kids do not have to grow up in fear. We can let them grow up more freely. Here in SA, we do not even allow them to go in the streets alone. Burglar bars, alarms and 6 to 8ft walls are some things that do not exist in NZ. Yes, you get the loon that runs into a mosque guns blazing even in NZ, but per capita, they are much better off than over here in the Rainbow Nation where normal murder does not even make it to the crime stats anymore.
Excuse #1: Lacking the R18K for the Work Visa application, the R14K to 25K to get there in front of the potential employers. I can arrange to stay at family over there.
