Stay with MWEB or move to Afrihost?

Hi guys,

My ISP currently is MWEB and my line-rental is through Telkom. I pay for a 1mb line and receive speeds of a 2mb line (weird as I download @ max 200kb/s). Any way, I want to upgrade my line to a 4mb uncapped line and am thinking of moving to Afrihost for my data and my line rental.

I spoke to MWEB and they want a 30 day warning before I can cancel my subscription which means the earliest I can join Afrihost is the beginning of November.

Do any of you have any advice or different options to explore for me?

Thanks.

Downgrade your mweb account to a 1GB account. Then give them their 30 day notice. This way you can sign up with Afrihost immediately and only pay mweb like R30 for next month. Check your PM :D

Go Afrihost.

Keep in mind that that 1Gb product from Mweb is not hardcapped... So don't run it over 1Gb....

Go Afrihost - becuase I need to pay off my credit card bill!!

Seriously though, we can offer you a lot - value, savings and just awesome service. Drop me a PM anytime and we can chat about how you can give us a try :)

PS We also don't do the 30 day long term imprisonment thing - you can cancel at any time if you think we're not doing it for you - and we have a 60 day Double Your Money Back guarantee :)

Are you allowed to immediately downgrade? Also whats the delay on retaking line back? curious because they take ownership immediately which means if they refuse to let go of your line you could get another isp to take it back hahaha

From what I understand downgrades are performed effective for the following month? What I mean with immediately is that you do not need to wait a full month extra to move over to another ISP.

Yes, but you should be careful with the OOB the bolt and all those ***. Remember to double check everything with mweb especially the billing.

Mileage may vary, but I must admit:

On my 6mb line I mostly achieved 6mb throughput on my Mweb 4mb uncapped.
I have since moved to 4mb Afrihost uncapped and now getting 4mb throughput.

In principle I'd say go Afrihost, but I think it's only fair to the OP to point this out.

Then get a 6mbs uncapped to go with your 6mbs line?

I moved from afrihost to mweb back in 2011 because their uncapped sucked and was reluctant to move back but I remembered that their service and response was much better and quicker then mweb so I moved to afrihost this month. Been 15 days so far and did 70gb on 1mbps line. Really happy with the performance, youtube seems more responsive than mweb as well.

Afrihost doesn't have 6mb, next up is 10mb at R800 which is double 4mb's price, and I'll hardly benefit.

So for rand value, as long as Mweb's system is giving the you full line speed it'll be the cheaper deal. Currently the OP is getting the benefit here, and an Afrihost 2mb uncapped will work out more expensive than Mweb 1mb uncapped.

I do feel dirty in not supporting Afrihost in this instance, but the OP asked what's the better deal for him.

And when mweb throttles him to dial up speed for doing 60gb? Mweb is the worst deal, plus there are other ISP's that offer 6mbps accounts

If he's going to download 60-80gb odd on it, then indeed he should be moving.

Throttling appears to be close to a hard cap on Mweb according to reports.

Definately go for Afrihost.

I left mweb 4 months ago and have never been happily on Afrihost.
Cheaper prices, great speeds and awesome support.
Its also awesome to be able to reset/recreate my ports so no need to phone Telkom.

Afrihost never complain or send you abuse notifications like mweb does all the time.
I have friends who say the new mweb throttling is crazy, you cannot even surf the internet and it lasts for a couple days.
