All I can say from dealing with Mweb over line issues lately is that their call centre staff are clueless and their admin staff are rude. I've spoken to two different people about billing issues and both have given me attitude. And get this! The one even changed my package without my permission! I'm just with Mweb because I have two sites hosted through them and its such a pain to move hosts.

I would recommend moving from MWEB . . . and be quick about it. You'll never know the joy of actual uncapped until you do:D (I moved to Afrihost)

Get away from MWEB ... their service has become slow, their billing is USELESS, once throttled the line is USELESS for upto 3 days, their cr@ppy attitude to their customer stinks ....
There are other plenty other choices ... but to debate staying at MWEB is simply a waste of time....

FIFY :)

MWEB is the worst ISP right now. If somebody on myBB comes up with his own theory of how his ISP's throttling method works because his favourite ISP refuses to share the limits with the public, then you should stay the faaaaaack aaaaawaaaaay from that skitty ISP. MWEB Guy once said that downloading games on their network is considered an abuse of use.

Conclusion: Kill yourself if you still want to go with MWEB despite having read the above text.

Go Afrihost - becuase I need to pay off my credit card bill!!

Seriously though, we can offer you a lot - value, savings and just awesome service. Drop me a PM anytime and we can chat about how you can give us a try :)

PS We also don't do the 30 day long term imprisonment thing - you can cancel at any time if you think we're not doing it for you - and we have a 60 day Double Your Money Back guarantee :)

Okay good...
I am on a 4Mbit ADSL package from MWEB, which *was* uncapped until they changed their tune (you know the story). The ADSL line rental is with MWEB, I do this because Telkom refuse to fix ADSL faults and they only respond to companies with a lot of clout.

It has come to my attention that I am being taken for a ride, paying R899 for 4Mbit/sec line when I can pay in the region of R600 for the same thing. That, and the fact that I am a heavy downloader (20Gbytes in a month is nothing when you download HD content because DSTV is such rubbish).

There are things that worry me:

1) If I go with another service provider (and I have to, I am feeling the financial pinch) Telkom will move me to a different ADSL port in the exchange with the risk of getting a "bad" port that crackles on the line which I cannot resolve because Telkom are a bunch of idiots. They test the line and send me an SMS the line is "free of defects" when the thing crackles to hell and back. My current line has been rock solid for 11 months now, I am VERY nervous about changing anything because I am not up for the fighting with Telkom.

2) How "uncapped" is uncapped? I download in bursts, for example, I might download one weekend in the month, and consume 100Gbytes possibly. The ADSL is disconnected whenever I am not at home because of the risk of lightning (lost everything in March this year when the phone lines were hit, and they frequently get hit) so that means I only consume bandwidth when at home, and that means after working hours.

3) I cannot synch faster than 8032kbps... my current line is set to that by MWEB because of the exchange being such a useless piece of crap. It has, in the past synched at 10008kbps but then I would get random disconnects. I guess that the only upgrade in future that I can expect then is an optic fiber and I will be stuck on 4096kbps ADSL for the next 5 years at least.

My issue with Axxess is that I am reading stories here of people being "managed" for downloading what I would download in a weekend (and legitimate stuff - I am also a Steam user). I have tested them with a trial account, and it does work as I expect, but I am not going to commit, only to find out later I get managed due to what I consider a drop in the ocean.

Maybe you can shed some light on these issues I have.

You must be unlucky Telkom fixes my line in 1-2 days when theres a problem and we are not a company and they also got a rep here too now which helps.

This happened last year, I have all the proof, about 13 fault reference numbers. I told them I want a new copper pair, they refused. They also refused to do an end-to-end test i.e. send a technician to my house. It cost me R800 to put a new phone line in to get some measure of connectivity and to get the new copper pair. I am in the process of litigation about that incident because they tried to charge me line rental for that line, after I got a new phone line because the one in question went dead, never to work again. The last fault reference remains open... 15 months later. go figure.

I absolutely LOATHE Telkom.. if there should be another telecoms company in the future, that can provide landlines, I will move to them the day they open for business.

With regard to moving your line, we sort that out with Telkom. If Telkom are moving you to a less "desirable" port on the exchange that is totally not cool - and this has not happened before to my knowledge. Since there is usually no downtime with a transfer - I would imagine they can't be disconnecting the line at any stage.

we believe that what we offer is the closest to the true spirit of Uncapped. We don't throttle ever, and we only shape when there is heavy demand on the network. This allows you to be unshaped or less shaped for as long as the network can possibly allow you to be - which I find is generally longer than with other ISPs that "hard" shape you according to specific times and conditions (like rolling windows and thresholds).

We get most 10Mbps lines not being able to achieve full sync - probably because of the connection being more delicate at higher frequencies. It is doubtful that this round of upgrades will address these issues - if they are addressing exchange backhaul issues :(

I agree. The problem I have is this. They will bump me to 10Mbit/sec and that is not going to work. Yet I still am expected to pay the full price as per normal because they will need to force the line down again. I know how MWEB operates.

So what I reckon will be the best here, is to keep the line speed at 4096kbps, and get a new ISP who hopefully will be cheaper. Then when ICASA finally grows some teeth over the next 5 years and I can get optic fiber to my house, then we can review the situation. The copper is old, there are still overhead wires and a Telkom technician told me to my face Telkom doesn't want to replace it. Reliability is key here, I cannot have a 10Mbit line and the thing keeps dropping or fails to synch. If I look at your website it appears that this will cost me R697/month as opposed to R899/month.

What Axxess have going for them, is a free static IP, but that is of no use if they "manage" your bandwidth, and that based on a Steam update of two games. I can guarantee you the same thing will then happen to me.
