Steam downloading a game I alread have installed

i recently acquired my friends steam account since he has no use for it anymore. with it he gave me cod mw3. i installed it, have all the shortcuts on my desktop. now whenever I go play the game it says Steam updating call of duty and then in another window it says 1 item downloading and I see that it's download cod 14 gigs of it. why would it do that?

Was the game bought via steam? Did he give you the backup files or the game files?

If I should guess, he gave you the game files but you installed steam yourself and then just placed the games files inside the folders?

It is most likely that the path is incorrect, then you can do this : https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129

If the files are in the right location you can remove the whol /Steamapps/ folder and run steam again with the game in the right path. When you run steam it will download only the SteamApps and create the correct registry entries. It should pickup the game and should not download.

** I am not at home now and cannot remember if the games files are stored in the SteamApps folder. If they are, don't delete the game files.

How did you install cod mw3?

If he had it in his steam account you should have just made a copy of his steam folder.

You can trying verifying the integrity of the cache
Deleting the .blob file.

So i uninstalled cod and steam and re-installed everything and all seems to be fine now.
