Steam downloads for capped users

*Please note: This is not a request for piracy*

After my laptop died some months ago, I've recently built a new gaming desktop PC, fired up Steam and was appalled by the size of the updates required. Probably around 50 Gigs or so of updates required but I'm on a 20Gig daily / Another 20Gig after midnight Telkom ADSL connection.

I'm not really in a position financially to move to a higher cap or uncapped monthly deal and fibre is unavailable where I live.

So my question is how do people deal with this? Some Googling suggests that I can use a backup from another Steam user that has the game I want and restore it to my system and play it so long as I've purchased the game for my account.

There are a few games that I would like to purchase as well that are in the 50Gig size range. Is there anyone in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town who I could visit with my USB 3 portable drive and do a backup from your Steam library to my drive? I could offer some sort of compensation such as a six pack of beers or something similar.

Here are the games I'm interested in:
Wolfenstein: Recent versions
Doom
Bioshock: The collection.

Updates for:
GTA V
The Witcher 3
DCS World
Assetto Corsa
Project Cars

Please let me know if you are able to assist.

Why not spend a little more than the price of a six-pack (R79) every month and get yourself a 100GB Fat Pipe account with Vox?
As the name suggests, you get 100GB every month and from 12am - 6am it's uncapped.

Check it out here.

or get a Telkom sim, activate smart wireless prepaid and pay R50 for 500Gb.

But yes, any steam user with the same game can perform a backup, give it to you and you restore it. The client does the verification check, not the game files, perfectly legal.

Ok, having read up on the packages you guys recommend it sounds like the Telkom R50 for 500 Gig deal would suit me best.

I should have a new Nokia 6 arriving tomorrow to replace my old Lumia 920. I take it I can tether the old Nokia (it has LTE) to my PC to use the Telkom deal?

Should work. But not LTE, Telkom runs on 2300 TDD (and I think now 1800).

Best you will get is 3G speed.

On my old Huawei p7 LTE on 1800 MHz I get up to 20mb. And on 2300 MHz with another phone I've topped at 50mb

Even if I can only get 10Mbit/s it would be better than the 2Mbit I get at the moment. :)

Regarding the Telkom SIM deal, R50 for 500Gig.
If you are roaming on MTN then you can't get it. You have to be connected directly to Telkom towers.
Check for a R (Roaming) on the signal bars when you have the sim in your phone.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

My new Nokia 6 arrived yesterday and I've just loaded the 500Gig to the phone.

Steam downloads are queued for tonight. :D
