Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams tells SABC to negotiate with unions to avoid blackout

Minister for Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has ordered the SABC board to resolve issues over job cuts, according to a report by The Sunday Times.

In a letter seen by the publication, Ndabeni-Abrahams directed SABC board members to return to negotiations with labour unions and attempt to end the ongoing dispute over lay-offs at the public broadcaster.

Quite a dilemma - masquerading as a public broadcaster while trying to compete with the industry. Used to be a fun game with big rewards but now that the taxpayers are disappearing and the freeloaders are still not paying, finding the piggy bank is getting hard.

Honorable Ms Minister you will be surprised most people will be delighted if SABC was closed down completely. It's an unnecessary financial burden and for most part people are watching a host of other stations / channels. Please don't feel bad it's rather a season of change. It's not your fault. For anything important announcement the president may want to make one can use YouTube.

@Jamie McKane, I've updated the site with an appropriate image to show how Stella is scrambling:

Ndabeni-Abrahams’s communication with the SABC and labour unions was based on a desire to avoid a blackout at the public broadcaster.

A blackout at the SABC would comprise the complete lack of content being broadcast over its various channels due to a protest by vital employees.
Pro tip to unions: The blackout won't work as no one watches SABC.

Good job on weaking gov's negotiation position before the negotiations even started.

YouTube, Netflix, DVD's, DSTV, anything but SABC
Have you ever looked at viewership / subscriber figures for what's available in SA?
Netflix subscriber counts are dwarfed by DSTV. Looking at most watched shows, DSTV competes with SABC 2. ETV has way more, but is several million behind SABC 1...
