Stellenbosch ADSL congestion?

Mine is still fluctuating greatly, 200-900ms to local servers... Don't know if I'll have any luck calling Telkom in since others are experiencing the same and just got told they don't know what the problem is.

The latency and connection speed has been all over the show this weekend. At times normal but for the most part utterly useless. Even this morning pings are well above 200ms to local servers.

Received another call from Telkom social networks this morning and apparently the balancing issue in Paarl still persists. Technicians are trying to sort out the problem and they will notify me once it is done.

Telkom definitely made some kind of change today between 12:22 & 12:24, because after that it has been below 20ms again :D

Unfortunately the download speeds are still low during the day, but at least I can play games again...

Mine looks good this morning, going to check at midday again as that was when my latency issues flared up mostly until the next morning.

So Telkom phoned me again, to ask if my ADSL is better now. I said yes, but told them about this thread. The guy (Teddy or something), recommended that everyone that has problems, also contact them on @TelkomZA.

I'm still in contact with Telkom social networks on a daily basis. At present my line is completely unpredictable. Speeds on my 1Mbps uncapped are stable but latency remains the problem. The pattern where it went of the charts from about 8pm to 12am is also gone. Now it can work perfectly during that time the one day and the next it's useless. Yesterday morning it was also terrible, today it seems fine.

I'm so tired of this.

Mine is still as good as reported this morning. I'm just hoping this stays that way for tonight when I'll really need a consistent connection.

I actually have the full 2048 kbps of my ADSL line to use right now and my latency is perfect.

My latency is also perfect at about 15ms and I managed to download at full 2Mbps too until 17:30 when my download queue got empty :D

Sounds good. Please post here later tonight or tomorrow regarding the performance tonight. :)

I would soooo love to know the root cause of this "hop 2" latency problem. We've been having similar issues in the Strand and Somerset West: Suddenly, your speed drops quite a bit and browsing (not to mention VOIP and gaming) becoming unresponsive. When you run a traceroute, you see latency of over 100ms (sometimes as much as 1000ms) on hop 2 (the exchange) when it normally sits at around 7 to 15 ms.

Though all this, the Telkom tech support will insist the line is fine (and indeed, when I check my router stats, the sync, SNR and attenuation will all be within normal parameters). I even had a Telkom technician at my premises today to confirm my filter & extensions, as well as the Telkom box inside our complex, are in order. The tech guys working on the DSLAM/IMAX units also insists that there isn't any congestion (with many free ports still available).

I've been having issues like this on and off for over 3 years ... and every time it seems to sort itself out after a few days without any explanation. I would love to know what causes this.

to follow up on this - telkom told me that the IMAX unit in somerset west exchange is only running @ 18% of bandwidth capacity. I can only assume its a hardware issue with one of the core units at somwes exchange

I did a few trace routes last night at about 9PM and all of them were perfect. 13-15ms throughout. Unfortunately I didn't game on Live so I don't know what P2P performance was like. Will check it out tonight.

It looked really promising last night, holding thumbs that things are finally back to normal.

I think they have really fixed the latency and download issues.

Here is a graph showing both my latency and download speeds for the past 3 days:
http://www.myimgs.co.za/images/pada/congestionfixed.png

The only reason why it looks like I only managed 1Mbps is because it is an average and NNTP is being shaped, and I haven't downloaded 24/7.

I was away for the weekend but Monday evening my ping was in the region of 300ms (local). Nothing has changed my side. :(

I'm just being shaped with my news server downloads to like 50KB/s on my 2Mbps line.

My speedtest.net results are fine (I'm shaping my downloads to 1650kbps):
* Take note that the ping value on my speedtest.net is always like 250ms even though it is like under 20ms in reality.
