The Stellenbosch University accused of raping a fellow student appeared before the local magistrate’s court on Thursday morning, 19 May.

ALLEGED STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY RAPIST GETS BAIL​

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, said the accused is charged with two counts of rape.

The Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court granted the accused bail at R1000. As part of his bail conditions, he is not allowed to be in contact with the victim.

“His case was postponed until 29 June 2022 for further investigation,” said the NPA spokesperson.

There are many rape cases a day. That which highlights this case is that there are two concurrent race related incidents at Stellenbosch and now a rape allegation which may involve one or more races. Since this is rape, I don’t care about race, however, this crime is sensitive enough to diminish the cause behind the other two incidents.

The suspect at the time is an accused and will be presumed not guilty. In the case he is proven guilty then I can only hope that Stellenbosch will in respect exercise the same zero-tolerance approach.

Nonetheless, in the case the alleged suspect was white, I am without doubt that the BBC would have already published the news.

I wish that question to be posed to either the Constitutional or Equality Court, but they will answer that we are a democracy, remind you that we had a TRC and lecture you on restitutional redress.

From my view, a race related crime needs to involve hate contextually.
