Ster Kinekor digital cinema upgrades: tech details

Glad they're upgrading and I do like the look of HFR, but seems a little underwhelming to me that the majority of the cinemas will be roughly 1080p. It's probably good enough for people to not really be able to tell the difference, but I still feel like there should be significantly more pixels on a huge cinema screen than on my TV.

All the tech in the world is not going to matter if the projectionist is incompetent and/or asleep at the wheel.

Ran into this particular issue several times.

Now they just have to get rid of the noisy and rude patrons and I might consider going.

Not to mention people coming late, sending smses or taking calls.

When they get rid of those I might consider going back. At times I feel some people need a good fscking hiding because they can't behave and don't give a toss about the rest of the people. Personally I would implement blocking devices for cellphone signals but that would be illegal.

Agree, 4k would be a good start but you have to keep in mind that you are sitting quite a few meters away from the screen so you would probably not notice.

I've got a better experience sitting 1m from my 46" Samsung LCD (I'm single) with Logitech G35 headphones (I'm single) and .mkv's. Truely brilliant.

Sub titles on for a movie with only English. Subtitles tinny music, leaves rustling. That was my last Ster Kinekor

Asked how they prevent movies from being copied off the drives or projectors, Dos Santos said that each film on the hard drive is password protected per site and allocated to a specific projector in a specific theatre.

Also, since a high quality pirated version would have already been made available by the time the movie gets here, any attempts to copy it would be pointless. :p

This, and the fact they properly clean the theatres about once a year. The layer of salt on the seats is the worst to me.

I can count on one hand the times I've been to the cinema in the last two years. As mentioned by previous posters what gets my goat is people in cinemas, the price of tickets and the general experience...which range from people chewing popcorn, ringing cellphones and talking.

I'd rather wait six months to buy the Blu Ray and watch it at home...if its a movie I don't care about I'll download it off the interwebz.
