One concerned Apple customer wrote to Steve Jobs:

Steve,
I was converted to Apple products with the announcement of the iPhone 3G. (My friends have been trying to convince me for years.) Since then I’ve purchased 4 iPhones, 2 computers, several routers, and miscellaneous other items. Unfortunately, I’m really starting to have a philosophical issue with your company. It appears that more and more Apple is determining for it’s consumers what content they should be able to receive. For instance, the blocking of Mark Fiore’s comic app (due to being political satire) or blocking of what Apple considers to be porn.

I’m all for keeping porn out of kids hands. Heck – I’m all for ensuring that I don’t have to see it unless I want to. But… that’s what parental controls are for. Put these types of apps into categories and allow them to be blocked by their parents should they want to.

Apple’s role isn’t moral police – Apple’s role is to design and produce really cool gadgets that do what the consumer wants them to do.

Thanks for listening
-Matthew

Steve Jobs replied:
Fiore’s app will be in the store shortly. That was a mistake. However, we do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy and Android phone.

No Steve - its not about porn, its about freedom.

Apple has the intense desire to be in control of everything - how ironic that you once made that the famous 1984 superbowl ad...

OMFG how I hate the apple mentality

Both of you are idiots.

Every other platform is completely open.. Apple is a closed platform. As far as I can see, that is "thinking" VERY "different"
What you both fail to miss is that people buy Apple because it IS a controlled environment.. the last thing I'd want is for Apple to pander to people like you, and open up the platform. It would be a huge mistake. [Added: To be honest, I hope Apple takes the closed software environment one step further an implement an App store for OSX as well]

My advice to you; stop telling us how much you'd never buy Apple products. Nobody cares.

P.S not sure if you've noticed, but Apple seem to be doing pretty well for themselves, $235 billion worth of well to be exact.

Have a look at the old 1984 superbowl ad and get some background on the story of 1984. This is exactly what apple is turning into. The funny thing is, that is precisely the apple way. First they ran on Motorola CPUs and blasted IBM saying how inferior they were - then they ended up using IBM PowerPC CPUs. Then they blasted intel saying how weak their pentiums were compared to PowerPC - and now they are running intel CPUs.

Steve Jobs is a self righteous smug hippie, he is the biggest troll of all and in the end he his a hypocrite for doing exactly what he said he would not do. His disciples live in his controlled environment and are mindless clones of him. They blindly believe when he says apple is the best. When he does away with sex they blindly follow him. When he says others copy from Apple, they believe him. Lets not forget that famous quote : "No, Steve, I think it's more like we both have this rich neighbor named Xerox, and you broke in to steal the TV set, and you found out I'd been there first, and you said, 'Hey, that's not fair! I wanted to steal the TV set'"

You guys are way off topic actually - this is about apple controlling everything and people buying into that.
Its not about me or my love for freedom (thus hate of apple).

Then don't buy their products? What's the problem here?

Everything in life is controlled mate. Think about it, absolutely everything. When was the last time you tried to get the latest firmware for your Nokia without a European code?? You ever watched a avi or wmv file on a Nokia without a 3rd party app? There restrictions and limitations everywhere but they made to violate which is why hackers are such a revered bunch...

To summarise: shareholders' return :)

Uhm, this is like forum and all, and you kinda like share news and stuff here? Did you get the memo?

Anyways, so that's why I shared the whole thing with Steve Jobs and his Android remark. Yeah, I read it over at Tom's and thought I'd post it here for others to read. So no problem really - just sharing some news.

Steve, the big brother shtick is getting tired

Thought this was apt.

Ah, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple and master of all you survey. You’re a highly moral man. We can tell from your serious expression, your steel-rimmed glasses and the turtlenecks you always wear. And if we need further proof, it seems you also want to keep porn out of our children's hands.

You feel so strongly about the subject that you're willing to publically chastise your old friends at Google. We asked a straight question: will you ever allow us to put applications on your mobile devices that you haven't explicitly vetted? Your reply was surprising: “There's a porn store for [Google's] Android… you can download it, your kids can download it. That’s a place we don't want to go, so we're not going to.”

Hang on Steve, we weren't talking about porn there were we? We were talking about applications in general. You know -- card games, calorie counters -- innocent stuff. You've sold over three billion of these babies already -- we assumed you knew what we meant.

I can understand you not wanting porn in your store, Steve. Most porn is gross and it really doesn't fit with Apple's brand. And I can see why it's different from the explicit lyrics in some of the 10-billion songs you've sold on iTunes. That's music, which is, like, art.

But we weren't talking about your store Steve, we were talking about my iPhone. Why can't I put whatever software I want on it? Didn't I buy it from you? I'm sure I remember giving you the money.

You know Steve, this is sounding more and more like you don't want anyone horning in on your racket and less and less like a moral crusade. If you let everyone put whatever they want on their iPhones, iPods and iPads, then they won't visit your app store as much, and that would suck.

Oh really? Like you would not be going IBM and then - oops now we have PowerPC. Or like when you would never go with inferior pentiums and now - oops were running intel CPUs.
Your disciples might believe you - the rest of us don't.

The beauty of Apple's products is that they work, and they work well. Besides the unfortunate period before Jobs returned, their stuff has been in a totally different class to Windows stuff. It's been fast, efficient and stable where Windows is always cumbersome and buggy. Why? Control. Windows as an OS has to run countless combinations of third party hardware most running their own "home-made" drivers, each with its own bugs; Apple far less so. All its core hardware is standardised and therefore it can be more efficient and well tuned; also having less need for third party drivers, it is less susceptible to external bugs.

The thing is that while open source and the freedom to choose your hardware from a wildly vast pool is fantastic, the fact is that this freedom creates its own problems, which manifest in unreliability, inefficiency and instability... all of which are diametrically opposite to Apple's goals.

Some people just want a really good product that works really well. Those people will buy Apple. The rest of us - those who are looking for bargains, or who want the bleeding edge of hardware technology, or who love tinkering and tweaking - those people will go with Windows or Linux.

The bottom line is that I believe Steve is not looking for control for control's sake (though his megalomaniacal reputation may seem to contradict this). I believe he is trying to protect the positioning of his brand the way he always has done - by keeping control over what goes in... and so he should do.
Valid points I thought...
