So Curro is also still struggling after the matric results. And someone here was saying private education is a good long term investment...

I think it's a good investment tbh,I think curro is struggling due to the downturn, not the results. My advtech shares are doing ok and they are in the same sector.

This is my opinion

Curro profit model is dependent on a (hopefully growing) middle class segment.
A middle class that :-
Wants their off spring to be middle class
Is facing a decline in surplus cash due to economic pressure

Take a long term view on this company.

A middle class that is also at the moment busy applying for Aus and other places.

I don't think the arguments supplied so far are valid. Its share price remained climbing through most of the downturn. It's only when the matric results came in that it started heading south.

This illustrates what I said earlier. Private education doesn't exist in a vacuum but is influenced by what happens to education in general. So not a long term investment but short to medium term. The moment the ANC ****s up education completely or starts interfering in private education (they will) sell all your shares.

Moans about long term investment...when a stock takes a dip for less than two weeks.

Sense it does not make.

True

Also
A middle class that (in some cases)
Are making decision to have kids much later in life in order to focus on their careers.
Is making decisions to have smaller families.
Is struggling to conceive
May consider switching from private to public if faced with a sharp decline in surplus cash.

private education needs a supply of children with parents who have surplus cash

It dropped with the rest of the JSE on the 6th of January. The matric results had nothing to do with it.The matric results were expected and if anything it would mean more investment as the public schooling system is why the results are so poor, not the private sector.

Here are some examples, look at the date (6th) and when the Chinese market opened and you'll see the majority of stocks took a tumble midday.

I seriously doubt that the matrix results have anything to do with Curro's decline (as stated already, it was hardly a surprise). The decline of the Rand is more than likely the bigger reason especially if they have foreign debt.

My money is just eroding away... any tips?

Yep. Pretty much on my side as well.
The only two stocks at this stage still showing a wee bit of profit is Capital appreciation and Curro.
For the rest, eish. Dit lyk nie goed nie. And i'm very reluctant to throw more money at the now "bargain" stocks for fear that they might slip even further.

Steinhoff SHFF is showing growth 2.4% growth for me, its a decent rand hedge investment. Otherwise I'm also bleeding all over the show.

Well - I've decided to bail for awhile, waiting (hoping) to see if the market recovers a little, then selling everything and putting it in my bond until I'm satisfied in knowing where we're heading - everything is way to volatile at the moment.

I think there's a good chance of a repo rate increase, which will put prime close to 10%.

Been looking at Astoria for a few weeks now and decided to take the plunge after payday.

Other than that, I've gotten rid of whatever I have in individual companies, and have most of it sitting in DBXWD, DBXUS and DBXJP. I'm currently up about 5% on these since the beginning of December...
