foreign shares are not performing, care to point out some stocks that are?

I have no idea. Was just thinking that foreign looks better for the future.

I see Taste Holdings is really low. Might get a few of those as Starbucks opening up midway through should increase stocks.

This is a scary article by Mike Schüssler considering that half of my portfolio is in falling commodities.

http://www.moneyweb.co.za/moneyweb-opinion/the-depressive-super-cycle/

was watching a video of Simon Brown last year, where he actually said a very true thing. never to invest in commodities since it is based on supply and demand. only in special cases where an economy needs the resources ( eg china), so you put money in, but only once the current price has doubled, and keep it there until it has doubled again.

so definitely not a long term investment at all

interesting video to watch : http://blog.justonelap.com/positioning-your-portfolio-for-2016/

First time investor here. Instead of spending my hard earned cash on booze and cellphone contracts I want to build a portfolio.
Right now it seems foreign investments is the way to go. Which platforms do you guys use to buy foreign shares?

Look for local companies with a strong offshore base or presence.Steinhoff etc, good for hedging against a weak rand

Any rand hedge stocks beside Steinhoff and usual suspects. Could DBX etf's be a rand hedge?

Yes, there's also ETNs like NEWUSD and NEWGBP which basically follow the USD and GBP respectively. Think there is a Euro one (NEWEUR?) as well.

There is also Astoria (ARA). Once they start investing the funds they raised in the last 2 or so months the price might correct (up or down). I bought a couple of those just in case.

Anyone still holding lonmin?

I watching mine drop to nothing. Only 400 Rand though

Jip dropping like a brick. This whole China demand thing is hurting commodities all over. Since this was play money I will not sell until it makes a profit or crashes entirely.

Nope. It was up and down between R17-R19. I cut my losses, put the money in something else (ARA) that can potentially recover it much faster than Lonmin could (if it actually can).

Any predictions for Capitec?

No idea.

My average purchase price is sitting around R517. Not sure whether to cut my losses and put the money off shore or just wait till I can make a small profit/break even.
