Stofile says "NO!" to Rugby Quotas!

Today has been a very eventful day in sports news. From the possibility that Michael Schumacher could race in the 2009 F1, to Morné Steyn replacing Ruan Pienaar, to SA losing their 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cup bids, to the possibility that SA could host the 2020 Olympic Games. Yet I find that the strangest event in world sports today, is the fact that SARU member, Mike Stofile, has made it clear that he's 100% AGAINST QUOTAS in rugby! "In fact", he says, "I'll be the first one to vote against the notion if it were ever brought up in a meeting". Funny, since we have Stofile to blame for the first spat of quotas some years ago.
Stofile realised that quotas don't work at all, and in fact minimalizes black players. He also realised that quotas will cripple rugby in South Africa if it were ever implemented again.
We have our dearest Oregan Hoskins to blame for the latest talks on quotas. He wants quotas reintroduced into provincial rugby, with each team having at least 8 players of colour.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Mike Stofile and hope he kicks Hoskins' anus!

See the problem is that there is talent of colour, its just not getting through. So in my opinion the politicians have wizened up abit and realized its not the coaches fault, but the systems behind him. And I think these politicians are starting to come at peace with the fact that it will take time to get pure trained talent to the top league.

All of this has been helped significantly with winning the world cup and beating the British kittens. And make no mistake. Off the field South African Rugby is a successful commercial entity. I dont think any other national sport in South Africa is as commerically viable as Rugby, maybe cricket. I mean we almost through the SANZAR alliance out the window when our viewing rights where threatened, our viewing rights being South Africans. We count for the biggest viewership of the 3 partners.

I'm not sure I buy all this stuff in any case. Every time they [sic] need support they sing the tune everyone wants to hear, so my natural question is, what is he looking for?

I couldn't care less what the colour of the player is so long as he is good enough. I was very amused when the 'Southern Kings' played against the British and Irish lions and the team was made up of other provincial players rather than local players. I found it strange, given that 'aparantly' most of SA's rugby talent comes from that region. Even more strange was that they allowed that fixture as it was as apposed to setting up a Bulls fixture at another stadium.

Either way, the SA Sports SAGA will continue no doubt, but for now, live in the moment because things are going well.

This is good, I have been enjoying my rugby a lot lately and wont be too amused if people start screwing with it just for the sake of quotas. Promote the game at school level in townships and villages, build facilities and then pick the best players.

Like who?

I know that some players (thinks du Plessis and Gerber) have come from the area. I think that this is one of those nonsenses that arise from a small incident. Maybe many years ago a few black folk got together and decided to have a game or two of rugger and now it's the home to rugby talent?

Makes me think of another homonid that feel down a hole in the ground and died and now is, miraculously, the mother of all humankind. Incredible the things you can do after you died.

Its more of a request to encourage players of colour to play from the most basic level of school boy rugby and work their way to the national team by proving their worth.

If we can encourage more players of the calibre of Tendai Mtawarira (yes I know he is Zimbabwean but they [used to] have some very good rugby schools up there and he played for Sharks) then I say this can only be a good thing. I don't care about the race of the players, I only care that we win!

That's my point, lol. Who knows how many players there are, but, their own administrators failed to realize an opportunity to prove it to those of us who doubt the legitimacy of their claim. Instead, they chose first class players from other unions.

Regardless, in reality, young players move to wherever the UNI's are, so it's not unrealistic to find a Pretoria born player in the Cape or a Cape born player in Pretoria. So, by that logic [to an extent at least], I expect the good-enough players to come through regardless of where in SA they were born.

Or a Springbok team captain born in Pretoria playing in Natal?
