Its unfortunate, BEE is only within reach to a group of high level black politicians, would it not be better to re-allocate the funds used to enforce BEE towards rebuilding the townships and empowering the people directly, what good is a R100 share in a BEE company when you live in a shack with no running water & the politician in sandton has R1 000 000 in the shares?

I mean, look at the black consciousness that came to light thanks to Steven Bikho..... What stops us as young South Africans (Black, White, Asian, etc) to start forming a new consciousness, regardless of race?
Um, the ANCYL?

Hey BradDC

It's funny you mention it. A couple of years ago, I was doing some marketing consulting for a NGO in KZN. The project focussed mainly on the township areas of KwaMashu and Kwa-Ximba and the whole idea was establishing a home stay initiative where the people could open up their houses as B&B's for their own people who couldn't afford hotel accommodation as well as for the tourists who wanted to experience the township experience.

The benefit for the home owners (regardless if it was a shack or brick building) is that they can earn an income, receive a small subsidy from the government to make their place look nicer as well as they will make sure that the area surrounding their home is safe for visitors. You can only imagine the domino effect it could have established.... That is what we need to focus on.

Whitey > Tourism is a brilliant idea, but we need to curb crime levels first before we think of letting americans/europeans venture into townships as a holiday package, One bad press event & the market could collapse in that township.

What I do see in the KZN area (a prime example is between Pietermaritzburg and Underberg, just before boston) is a giant mansion, literally hollywood style greek pillars 2 story, 30 bedroom, mercedes parked outside. Owned by a chief, 900 meters away are shacks, no running water, no electricity, no schools to speak of. This is an example of social injustice, the RDP developements are great (when not corrupt) but the land still belongs to a chief, and even if the property is theirs, they still pay almost all their earnings to their chief. This is not equality. At the moment there is no way up for the lower black class, and its not exactly like their brothers are helping them.

ANCYL > ? when did you last see a white/coloured/indian person in the ANCYL, the word ANC begins with African, and according to the government/AA/BEE, white does not mean african, even if you and the past 6 generations of your family where born here.

What do the people get in return for paying most of their money over to the chief? If it's nothing then why are they paying? Tradition? I mean really, if you're too stupid to stop paying then you deserve to suffer.

BradDC, that is a valid point. Unfortunately you will find people who take advantage of their "title" just to enrich themselves. That is why a home stay project like I've mentioned before will not solve the problem over night. It will be a slow process where the emphasis has to be placed on educating the people. But look at it this way..... if you should have a house in one of those townships, knowing that you can make money by running it as a B&B, surely you will take responsibility in making sure your area is safe.

As soon as the other people see how easy it is to make a living by making your house available for people to stay in, they would also like to jump in and so the process starts.

This tradition thing won't last very long as the people, regardless of how poor they are, are getting fed up with the corruption of their leaders.

Like I said, how does one start an organisation with new prinicipals, stating that the colour of your skin doesn't determine whether you are African or not but rather that....if you are born in South Africa, you are a South African. and work from there

Education does play a vital role in a society as you can teach the children from an early age of how to live together as one nation. However, educating them on what happened in the past and how it can be made better. How do you think the Germans felt afer WW2. The young generation of Germany wants to move on with their lives, having learned from the past. Learning to live a better people.
-
So how do you start a league, similar to the ANCYL, but without all the propoganda?
Would seem generally - the germans do have issues (with their past.) (Not helped by any focus on the 2nd WW or the holocaust.)

In answer to the ANCYL? Um, a Peace Corp? Voluntary/involuntary conscription?

This government suffers a problem with vision - they have none - and it is all black - forgetting our rainbow past - except when they want to stick it in your face.

And we don't have a president - and the one we do have - when he occasionally visits the country - believes potatoes cure aids - and telco is getting cheaper - because he said so. Same for the rest.

(must be gone.)

The ANC youth league like so many politically oriented organisations in this country has passed it's sell-by date. It served a valuable purpose during the struggle, but now it exists purely for the enrichment of it's high ranking members. Like so many relics of the past, it should be forever consigned to the history books.

But I really think when the next generations, like mine, gets into a position to hire people, things will change, and that may not be too far away. I really hope it does.

I hope so too. Judging by the recent comments on this thread, if the majority of white South Africans are like the people on this forum, then we can definitely do away with AA. I believe I'd get a fair chance if I was trying to get hired by you guys.

Well Orin76, The reasoning behind AA and BEE and all those other initiatives to "correct the wrong" are fair but worn out. It's not about standing a fair chance. If you have the neccessary qualification and skills to do the job (same as any other graduate, regardless of race) then you'd be hired. The private sector needs skilled people who have the right business mind set. If that can happen, the quality of our services and business will greatly improve. Unfortunately, there are people in positions who actualy shouldn't be there that is doing the system more harm than good.

I also hope that those who are participating in this forum can actualy do something concerete. As they say...."action speaks louders than words".

There are definitely young South Africans out there who are tired of seeing the race card being played whenever something is not going the way the government wants it to go.

The new generation wants to focus on the future, making this country a place that everyone can be proud of. Negativity is as a result of what is currently happening out there. If the government can't fulfill its role as the public protector, then the initiative has to come from the private sector and the people themselves (in a legitimate way of course). At the end of the day, with out the private sector, you loose 80% of the country's income provider.

By the way.... has anyone of you in this forum actualy took the time to read Pres Mbeki's 1996 "I am an African" speach made in parliament when the new contitution was revealed?

For those who are not so narrow minded, go to: www.soweto.co.za/html/i_iamafrican.htm

If we are South Africans can take this to heart...... we can definitely make this work!

"They say they can't get jobs, but what are they doing in London? Menial labour that they'd never do back here."

Menial labour with a life and a prospect of staying alive longer is better than any alternate, as shown by the degenerating situation locally!

Did you guys see that article in yesterdays news where those students painted their skin black and protested outside Mbekis office???

They were saying that they are africans too and are sick of being discriminated against because they are white...so true. We should do that in every city.

I was in London for 2 years and if I could go back I would!! I got soo much experience. Something which is virtually impossible to do fresh out of college.

The new government has such a bad taste in their mouth for white people its making the whole country suffer. I mean changing the name of JHB international is SUCH A FRICKIN WASTE OF MONEY!!!!

We complain about crime and they respond with, er we dont have enough funds for police. The police dont have enough people, the people they do have arent paid enough so they are more inclined to commit crime themselves etc etc.

so......how `bout not WASTING money on unneccessary namechanges and put the dam money into policing???!!!

OR bring in the army. What are they doing anyway?? At least raiding will give them something to do.
