Stop the strict lockdown and open the economy now – Economist

presenting on the impact of COVID-19 on pensions and the South African economy

It's not helping but our pensions were borked the second we got relegated to junk status.

Consumer spending, measured through cash and card payments, has declined by 45% since the lockdown started.

And most of that is only going to a few of the big guys (PnP, Checkers etc etc). The SME side of things is dead.

Alcohol ban to reduce people in and out of Emergency care at hospitals 35000 per week, let alone car accidents and alcohol abuse.

Smoking bans as you are 14x more likely to get complications and pneumonia from covid19.

Ramaphosa did the right thing. Sure closing fast food maybe not the best. Just allow for drive thrus. But one sick cashier and there it goes off like hotcakes.

Many countries are closed stricter than us.

Ja, this wont happen. Changing to a partial lock down will only see a few more businesses allowing to open and operate. I seriously doubt they going to say we can go back to work, especially not the people that can work remotely.

Not sure where you got the evidence that smoking results in a 14x increased risk of COVID complications?

The alcohol ban is a sledgehammer approach to something that needs considerably more nuanced approaches, but in broad strokes can be accepted as a good thing.

As for the smoking ban, are you suggesting that just stopping smoking the day of lockdown reduces your risk of complications and pneumonia by 14x?

Ramaphosa did the right thing in broad strokes, the twat securocrats underneath him though have gone overboard with the petty dick swinging that does nothing expect delegitimize the lockdown as a whole.

Most countries are nowhere near as strict as us. A few are similar...
