@Mila
Thanks for the info. And yes, I doubt anyone will mind - after all, this is the thread for exactly that :D:thumbup:

:)

Thanx

This was the same set up. If I remember correctly the shutter speed was 20 seconds.
This is not a very good copy of that pic. This one was shared in a small file. :(
Edit
Found a better copy:

Care to share your settings/method?

The settings were (if I remember correctly):

Camera: Nikon V1 (trying out the one I bought on special at the Photo and Film Expo)
Lens: 10mm (28mm equivalent full frame)
ISO: 400
Aperture: F2.8
Shutter: 15 seconds on mechanical shutter
Focus: Manual at infinity
Tripod: Nearest wall

This camera does have more sensor noise than an SLR, so next time ISO 200 and 30 seconds may be better (or use an SLR)

Agree with Mila – the main danger photographing lightning is getting mugged. Does anyone have ideas on a safe place around Pretoria for this?

We tried Rademeyers. Had a few nice shots. The security guard just gets a bit antsy. but I'm sure if you arrange at the restaurant they will not mind.

But yeah. I plan on building my next house with a view for thunder :D :D :D
Dreaming more likely but yeah :D

Thanx for your settings Garry.

Thanks Mila, Rademeyers seems like a good viewpoint for these photos.

Andre Harmse says that he uses StarStax. Does anyone here have experience with this software who could comment on usability?

Hopefully there is a storm again tonight so that I can try this stuff out.

:) there are trees in the way but take a flash light and walk a bit. I found a couple of nice spots.

oh take a jacket. Just before the storm hits it is cold. And my flip flops were not a great idea either. But so we learn.

I need to invest in a large umbrella as well.

try and not buy the golf umbrellas with the metal spike/point. They are great for attracting lighting.

Tried using the StarStax software for processing images from last night's storm. Here is the first attempt. There is obviously still some learning ahead, but the software looks promising. (One bit of learning is to take a rain jacket next time.)
