Eish, had a really good day at the game.

A great stadium with awesome views of the field from likely every seat in the house.
I was seated about 5 meters behind the goal line, 24 rows up.
After getting parking at the waterfront, a short walk up to the stadium and 5 minutes in the line to get to the gates and all was well.

500ml beers at R15 each was welcome.
Beers at half-time were easy enough to get hold of.
Getting hold of food seemed to be a mission - never bothered standing in line - opted for more beer. :D

Nando's and Kauai (sp) were some of the names I noticed regarding the food vendors.
Boeries at R20 a pop seemed steep - considering the Boerewors looked like Droewors.

Seats were comfortable and at the end of the day, can't complain.

Biggest plus over Newlands - You can take your beer to your seat.

Atmosphere was good with the Mexican wave doing it's rounds.

Though, it still didn't feel like home, like Newlands.

Sure the stadium will be awesome for the World Cup and night games will be legendary!

I'll give public transport a try today. Will be traveling into town from Goodwood on Metrorail & then take the free shuttle to the stadium. Should be fun, I hope.

Dude - on my way out of the waterfront I saw tons of people lining up for the shuttles!
Looked kind of tragic.

I parked at Granger Bay on the waterfront.
Traffic was a bit hectic, but to sum it up, got in and out pretty easily.
Left town via the M3 though, which was empty as it seemed all of the Boland supporters were making their way to the N1 :)

Cameras were there, footage on the big screen as well.
Helen Zille in her opening comments made mention of being Live on SuperSport.

That was a super cool event. As cool as seeing photos of the stadium were, being there in person was amazing. There was a great vibe in the crowd and the organisation from the parking along the Foreshore, to the free shuttle service in to the stadium was exceptional. I honestly never thought it would run so smoothly. Oh, and the rugby wasn't bad either. :D

Bring on the FIFA World Cup! I can't wait...

We walked back to our car... Using the Shuttles to the Stadium wasnt to much if a mission... But after the game we decided to walk and get a few drinks along the way... Just wished there were a few more places to stop... Some really expensive places enroute ;)

The pitch is awesome, the seats are definately better positioned than at Newlands (I think every seat is a good seat) but it still isn't Newlands, also you are allowed to take Beer to your seats at Newlands now... They changed it a while back... Food was expensive and I also just kept with Beers, to bad they didnt use kegs, would be awesome if they could drop drafts to R10 (Kegs are cheaper anyways) but R15 is a standard price at Rugby and Cricket events it seems...

Overall a nice day, would love to see it when the top circle is also filled... One I did notice is that the Mountain side spectators had to look into the sun the whole time, luckily I was in the shade ;)

Sat on East side on halfway 6 rows up. Hectic sunburn!!! Choose West side if you can.

Great view and an impressive stadium.

Shuttle wasn't too bad, but queuing on the way back was a little chaotic and took an hour from stadium to getting a bus. Yesterday this wasn't a problem, but in mid winter with pouring rain and a NW gale it ain't gonna be pleasant.

Metrorail will wreck SWC

I took train no 3518 at 12:25 from Vasco Station in Goodwood after leaving my car at a nearby parking lot. The train was on time & arrived at Cape Town stationjust before 1pm. From the station it was a short walk to Hertzog Boulevard where the Golden Arrow Shuttles were. The route from the station was well signposted with security along the route.

Waited less than five minutes before boarding a bus, which filled up very quickly, and we were off. There were 50 Golden Arrow busses and they were all spotless & clean. The support staff were excellent at getting the busses filled up and on their way. We were dropped of in Somerset Road and from there we walked underneath the circle to the stadium, with signs & support staff showing the way.

Arrived at the plaza in front of the main enterance at 13:15 and hung around for the gates to open at 14:00. The gates opened at 13:40 and there seemed to be some confusion as to what people were allowed to take in. I only had a reusable bottle of water which I had to empty out. At first they wouldn't let me in with the empty bottle, bur eventually they relented.

Found our seats quite easily & then we took a walk around the inner concourse to have a look around. A few people were already waiting for the beer stalls to open. I found the Boerewors/Droë wors rolls a bit expensive at R20. Only later noticed they had Footlongs for the same price.

It would have been much better if beer was served from kegs instead of tins. One stall even ran out of plastic mugs.

Found it quite funny that from above one could see right into the mens toilet below & see the guys standing at the crib. The staff brougt the shutter down a bit & privacy was restored.

The stadium & the pitch is amazing and I really enjoyed the vibe.

We left about five minutes before the end wistle blew & made our way to the busses and in no time we were on our way. The Golden Arrow Service was excellent.

Got back at Cape Town Station with five minutes to spare and got on to train 2311 on platform 8. This train was to depart at 18:23. 18:23 came and went & we were still waiting. After a few minutes we noticed a Metrorail employee makin phone calls on the platform. We queried why the train was delayed & he advised that they were waiting for another conductor. A few minutes later the conductor arrived, but wouldn't get into the train. A third metrorail employee arrived ant they had a big discussion. I couldn't hear what was said, but it was quite clear that the conductor was unhappy with something. Eventually at around 18:45 the train departed Cape Town Station and arrived at Vasco at 19:05

The platforms at Cape Town Station are full of informal traders and trash is lying all over the place. It is quite a disgusting state of affairs. It is all good and well to upgrade the station, but then they need to keep the place clean as well. I use Vasco & Goodwood stations on a regular basis and the urine stench is overwelming and the station are dirty as well. My 10 year old son even commented on this.

I believe that the renovations at Cape Town Station was to be completed in November 2009 already. They are still far from finished and I strongly believe that Merorail will let us down during the Soccer World Cup in June 2010.

Another question I had... The seats that still needs to be put in, I take it they are the ones that will be removed after the World Cup, seeing as they are being placed on a temp scaffolding or something, and be replaced with, what exactly?

Now that you mention that bathrooms, my girlfriend made a comment about people being able to see into the Women bathrooms and see people on the toilet, unless the close the doors of the stalls (Which they obviously will) but still seems odd that people walking by will be able to see the toilets...

I think that more boxes will be build into the area where the temp seats are.

I parked at the Civic centre.
Was a schlep getting to the stadium from there.
5 min walk to bus.
10 min wait for bus.
15 min trip on bus.
15 min walk from stop to stadium
15 min wait in que to get into stadium

Once in the stadium, everything was great, was quite impressed.
It ain't Newlands but its still good.

Left 20 min before the end, because I didn't want to experience the schlep with 40 000 people leaving at the same time.

If you're going to go to the stadium, make sure you take ZERO FOOD with you, lots of people had to hand in biltong, droewors, cooldrinks, water etc.
Get to Cape Town 2 hours before the event starts, and be prepared to spend 3 hours getting back to your car.

15 min walk from stop to stadium? For real? At what speed? What were you doing in the 3 hours until you got to your car?

The wait outside the turnstiles, 5 minutes at most, with the process very efficient.
The bus stop is only temporary, surely you saw the IRT station close to the circle under construction.

Your experience is vastly different to that of most people I have spoken to. Some were back home within 30 minutes. Some described the bus service as flawless.

Even with the temporary but shuttle, i.e. not using IRT stations and not using the new buses, the experience is significantly better than the nightmare that is Newlands.

Yes those are my impressions.

And yes, nice stadium, but I would rather go to Newlands for rugby.

Break Athlone stadium down if that pleases you.

These are the stations under construction that will be used during and after the WC.
It consists of covered walkways and enclosed glass stations, which will link the stadium to the city using 36 new Volvo, 18m and 12m buses.

So there's the heart of the problem. You can't like Cape Town Stadium, because you are afriad that it will mean the end of Newlands. From what I've seen the bus service ran brilliantly, even though GA Busses are known to be bad. I can't wait to see how a trial with the IRT busses go.

A 10 minute wait for the bus and a 15 minute trip? Are you being serious? Stop being absolutely pathetic. Those times are more than in line with what you would experience in a first world country. You queued for 15 minutes? Haha, get a life dude and take your negativity elsewhere!
