We have almost no record of cash-in-transit heists in the 1980s, or before that," said Gauteng police Deputy Commissioner Bushie Engelbrecht.

According to South Africa's Institute of Security Studies (ISS), political activists and liberation movements were among those involved in the first organised cash heists in South Africa in the early 1990s.

'Strong evidence of involvement of people with expert military training'
"We know from evidence given in court and at the TRC, that large numbers of robberies took place on banks and cash-in-transit vehicles before 1994, ostensibly not for personal gain, but to raise funds for political coffers in preparing for the first democratic elections," said Johan Burger, a senior researcher at the ISS.

I for one am 99% sure that the majority of these heists are being committed by former MK soldiers, or at least being directed by them. And I believe witchdoctors are also in on the act, as I believe they get some kind of muti made specially for heisters in return for very large amounts of money.

why? All it takes is the will to do it, some ak-47's, a few stolen cars and a little preperation.

Does it really take a soldier to do that?

I think its plain old criminals

Nope. The organisation is militaristic. The actual heist event is concluded with such precision amid the chaos around it, it's scary. But the biggest indicator to me: these guys don't talk. Normal "plain old criminals" sing like larks when questioned, particularly the younger ones, but heist suspects do not. That is a trait learned during some kind of training.

No, just too many indications of a military hand in the training for my liking.

Do not for one second ever think a criminal is stupid. The dumb ones are the ones that get caught twice doing the same crime. Criminals, particular cash in transit heisters and bank robbers, etc, are not stupid.

Personally I feel all it requires is a mild level of intelligence and most importantly, a complete lack of respect or care for human life (including your own)! if you are brazen enough and are truly willing to kill without a second thought (woman, children, anything) you could pull anything off.

Our society's fast declining morality is ensuring that we have more and more of these people everyday, no need for military training, just grow up in a place where rape and murder happens around you everyday, you’ll desensitise quickly!

It seems like the dogs have turned on their handlers.

Let's face it, this country is way out of control and the ANC government doesn't know how to stop their former comrades that have turned into dangerous criminals.
