OK, so I'm a first year at varsity, and the cash always seems to be on the low around here for students, especially first years because they tend to go out more often than the rest. So, I need to come up with a plan to make some extra money, not just to go out with but also because I tend to have quite a bit of free time at the moment.

Ok so I have come up with a few possible options:

1 - Get a job (Like become a bartender, waiter etc)

2 - Design Websites for people or flip premade websites

I did a course on webdesign last year so I'm not that bad at designing websites. I also had a job last year so I have a nice amount of capital that I could use to buy old websites and then fix them up and sell for a better price.

3 - Sell laptops

I can organise myself a cc and then register to local suppliers and sell laptops at affordable prices to students.

Ok, sofar that is my list and I will soon decide which one to pursue as each one of those will take up most of my spare time. So if theres anyone with any other ideas or comments then please reply, I'm desperate to get out of this financial hole..

Option 3 might be more hassle than it is worth because people will expect you to be the PC technician as well as salesman. Lots of time required for little reward.

What are you studying? Maybe something along the lines of your studies would be a good idea.

i would say get a job as a waiter or bartender.

I would have first said do the web design stuff. But i think this may require you attention during the day when you should be in lectures anyways - so i gave this one a skip.

Selling laptops - yeah sure you could do this one, and also do the bartendering and waitering thing. Only thing is , from my experience not many students by laptops

Website flipping, just like property flipping, is a very big thing over seas. Let me give you a basic example so u'll definitely understand:

I buy a website, like a blog, that I think is not performing up to standards.

Then I fix the site up, make it look better, optimize it for search engines, get more traffic to the site, put some advertisements on the sites that earn me money etc.

Then I sell the site at a much higher price than I got it for because it makes a passive income for the owner etc.

I've been doing the web development thing for over a year now. It's good money, assuming constant demand, but it does take a lot of time if your studies are keeping you busy.

Don't neglect your studies you only get one shot. Rather spend your time studying, get better grades and then earn more for the rest of your life.

here's my experience... 2 can work, but you need people to give you work and be able to trust you. have you ever designed website? any links?

3, will work great... provided you do the following... sell small stuff. students

laptops don't really sell when it comes to student's. if you can get refurbished laptops then you can sell those. most students won't buy a laptop which cost them, R5k, but will buy a flash drive with costs them... R200... memory, etc... those small peripherals...

you work on a order basis. let them pay first or give you a 60% deposit before you deliver the stuff. use their money to buy the stuff you are going to sell. don't use your money you will loose out... someone can place an order and simply say they don't want that item anymore, while you have used your money to pay for it...

so be wise... number 3 will work well, as you will always have petty cash, sell small stuff,

IT students like gadgets... so find things that are cheap and easy to sell. max R500, external hard drives, etc...

i know a lot of people that need hard drives, DVD writers, flash disks... those small stuff...

PM me i will give you a cheap supplier to use...

Explain please

I should write clearer sorry. I meant to say i like recommending promotional work to students. The pay is usually around R50-R75 an hour, you can pick your shifts/hours, you get free stuff, and its usually pretty amusing.
I used to do 4 hours on a sat and sunday, and 8 hours during the week.
Just under 3.5k a month doing very little work, made for nice drinking money

number 3 is your best bet. don't use a lot of money though to buy goods to sell. use very little of your money. business does not need a lot of money. just a good strategy... use the golden rule of accounting. use someone else's money to make money... there are hundreds of website designers out there....

sell the small items... remember to take a deposits... don't sit with stock, take orders, then the deposits, then go and buy and then deliver...

Sorry, what "work" does it entail and who do I contact? Which companies?

Will try get the contacts and Pm them to you ( i did promo work around 4 years ago.... but there used to be quite a few of them),otherwise you can go on a saturday to a major mall and ask the ppl there doing promo for the name of the companies. generally they look for ages between 16-25. I got some crap jobs in the beginning, but most promo ppl are unreliable, so if u just pitch up and actually do the work, u end up getting the awesome jobs quickly.

edit/ jsut read the "work" part. Generally in the beginning u do crap stuff, promote wines/alcohol, promote whatever product they have in store etc. I ended up doing club promos, where u go to a club and give away free booze, or are told to try get the "party" going by giving stuff away etc (these paid exceptionalyl well, did a 2 hour promo at billies giving away free tequila, got paid R350 by promo company, and R500 by billies club owner... although this was an exception..), you can also choose to supervise, which literally means driving around and making sure the promoters are actualyl doing their jobs.....

There is a massive market revolving around this and there are countless auction and sales sites where people list sites they have made or sites that are older and already making revenue.

The only problem is they are pretty expensive, especially with the current exchange rates.

PM me and I'll give you some links if you want :)
