GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. Or something like that.

So in some way all Cellular Service Providers are "GSM".

If the question was on technology used - yes Vodacom, MTN and most of the known cellular providers are GSM. However most of the service providers in US use a technology called CDMA except couple of them like AT&T. Even in India and China, some of the service providers use CDMA technology instead of GSM which is very prevalent worldwide. CDMA is patented by Qualcomm and is reportedly more efficient but has its problems in roaming etc

Cheers

Lol thats as funny as the stupid question posed!

CDMA is analog technology, you want to know how a technologically superior country like the US are so far behind in mobile technology? CDMA is the reason!

GSM is standard around the world, any phone without 3G will work on GSM.

Wrong, CDMA is a different mobile switching technology to GSM and the 3G you talk about is based on WCDMA technology. It is different technology not used in most countries, due to Qualcomm's patents and not due to being technically inferior!!

Maybe it is not so stupid question, most people assume GSM is a better mobile technology since it is more prevalent as can be seen from your reply.

How many networks in the US are still using CDMA or WCDMA?

WRONG !

All carriers around the world run on GSM. However fast technology was introduced. 3G runs on UMTS not GSM and UMTS is slowly replacing GSM as the wireless network carrier ;)

WRONG! (In a way.)

Not all run on GSM, The US dont! Only a few that are starting now realised GSM is the way to go! In the mid 90s the smartie pants US people went against GSM and went for CDMA/WCDMA!

I know 2nd generation and 3rd generation networks and how they work.
GPRS and EDGE still run on GSM!

Yes slooooooooowly but GSM will not fall away till maybe 2030!
