Hi guys,

Having an issue trying to connect to an ubuntu 10.10 box. vino-server is setup to allow connections, ports are open on the firewall and I can even see its trying to get authentication on the other side, but there is no dialog coming up asking for authentication. Look at the netstat output line, showing that a connection has been opened on port 5900 on the remote machine:

Code:
tcp        0      0 41.192.xxx.xxx:5900     41.0.xxx.xxx:36158      SYN_RECV

Have any idea why its not asking the other user to allow the connection?

tightvncserver runs fine, but I need to share the users desktop. Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: And yes, I know vnc is not a very secure protocol, I will tunnel through ssh as soon as the bloody thing works.

I do not use vino, but I can share what works perfectly for me.

Try the x11vnc way, very simple and I used this on Ubuntu 10.10 with great success, and just tried it now with 11.04 and works very well.

I just created this script and added it to the Ubuntu start-up applications in the system menu after installing x11vnc on the Ubuntu machine:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/x11vnc -many -tightfilexfer -noxdamage -display :0 -bg

What I did not mention is that you can now use any vnc viewer, like vinagre, to view the remote desktop.

Just an update - for some reason it just decided to start working by itself. Think maybe it just needed a restart or new ip or something, but it works now. Thanks for the tips though, may come in handy one day.
