Suggestions for a 46-50" non-3D HDTV for use as a PC monitor?

Called them and they have stock of the LG PZ950 50" on special for about R9000. Samsungs are on order for sometime around the 21st. The LG is a 2011 model, but at that price it seems like it might be worth it.

I would definately look at the LG, although last year's model, its top of the range ... equivalent to the Samsung PS51D8000 (not available local in 51").

why is lg not as popular though?
when i was looking last week, 70% of the stores floors were filled with samsung, then like 10 for sony and lg each, and then the rest.

As I understand it, the LG 50PZ950 is their top of the range plasma, but it's last years model so the tech lags behind the Samsung E550 a bit. Picture quality not quite as good, and the 3D not quite as good either, but still a solid tv. I think I'm going to spend the extra money and get the 51E550. Found some in stock for a touch under R10 000. Comes with 2 pairs of glasses too, so don't have to shell out for extras.

Can anyone reccomend a good surge protector? :p

Mainly market momentum & brand/advertising budget, same like Toyota & VW in the car industry.

My personal opinion though, Samsung do deserve their position in the TV in market, on balance for me they do produce the best/competitive TVs currently (not to say others dont have some decent models).

Well said. It just mustn't become a bad thing.

Seems like you are leaning towards the higher end of the budget? If looking to spend around R6000, I would suggest, as Roman mentioned, the Samsung LA46D550 or LG 47LK530, of which I own the latter.

Going to go have a look at the 51e550 on Saturday and will see if it looks worth it, otherwise I'll have a look at the smaller ones, thanks.

I have somewhat of a list of secondary questions for those of you who use 3D TV's as PC monitors:

1: Plugging the PC into the TV, what mode or settings do I need to use on the TV in order to use it as a 1920x1080 monitor? Obviously I don't want any overscan, but more to the point, will it be possible for me to play 3D movies from a 5 1/2" blu-ray drive in the PC to the TV or should I just look at a blu-ray player seperately?

2: Would it be possible to run games in 3D mode from the PC on this TV set (obviously games that support 3D)? Running a pretty solid gaming rig.

3: What is the "game mode" mentioned in the specs for the E550 series?

Thanks again for all the feedback.

I also want to know what "game mode" is. I have the 51" 3D Samsung Plasma, but for the life of me I can't see anything different when turning on "game mode"

Went ahead and bought the PS51E550 this morning, and have spent some time watching stuff and playing around with it. It came with a couple of 3D blu-ray movies (thor, captain amurka and ice age 17). I've managed to hook up my PC successfully to the TV set and can run the blu-ray movies to the television via a blu-ray drive in the pc. Problem is at this point I can't seem to run anything in 3D from the PC and I suspect I would need something like Nvidia's 3DTV Play software along with some or other IR/glasses kit from nvidia. I am sensing failcaek. Any other suggestions from people on how to get the 3D working from the PC? Only other issue I'm having is getting sound from PC to TV. I've tried the PC audio out to the DVI audio in as well as PC audio out to component L/R in and neither seem to work. Not sure what to do about that, so am using speakers hooked up to PC in the meantime. Works fine as an interim measure. Very happy with the set, and will spend some time messing with the calibration tomorrow. Need to mess a bit with brightness/contrast.
