Sunroofs

I have seen too many cars botched by crappy installations of aftermarket sunroofs to ever suggest a person put one in.

A factory-fitted sunroof for Mercs (and, I would imagine, other upmarket cars) uses a special roof-panel that includes extra strengthening: Merc warrant their cars with sunroofs to have the same structural strength as their cars with conventional roofs.

And, when I rolled the car three times to avoid killing a couple on a motor-bike coming straight at me, I was very happy that they had included the extra strengthening ...

Aftermarket sunroofs don't have the same strengthening, so put one at risk when involved in an accident.

I don't see why everyone is complaining. Close it when you feel like it same goes for opening it, unless u wanna avoid paying extra. Although it makes the car look good. Test drive Mitsubishi asx with the ceiling open, wonderful experience.

I don't actually see anyone complaining. The OP asked for opinions and people gave their opinions. Some were in favour of them, some weren't. Try not to feel offended if the whole world doesn't share your point of view.

They look good, I just worry about someone slashing it to get to your radio/whatever is in the car/the car itself.

I will never buy a car without one, I like it and I use it an lot. And it does make the car look even better. I cannot imagine a GTi without one.

Been thinking about this myself. Currently speccing the M135i and cannot make up my mind if I want one or not. Always scared of leaks etc, but is so nice when they are open in vent mode. Also, scared it will be like a swimming pool. Nice for the first couple of months and then just become a hassle or sumin I am paying for, but do not use.

On a car like that a Sunroof Is a must. I think you will struggle to sell it without.

I don't feel one way or the other. I wouldn't walk away from deal because there was no sunroof..

Isn't it easier to that through the side windows than sunroof?

I dunno.

I think they would probably just crack the lock (takes them about 20 seconds to do this, from experience).

But some inexperienced kiddy with a knife that sees something on your dashboard he wants can quietly get through the roof.

Guess that's what insurance is for...

Have a factory-fitted sunroof on my BMW 325 (2002 model) and have to date not have one single leak on it.

Only issue I've had in the car's entire lifespan is to have the glass panel remounted on its rails as it turned skew somehow. BMW agent total repair cost was half an hour's worth of labour.

Have had factory fitted sunroofs on my cars since 1996 ( bmwE36 328- to current, X5 40d, Jeep GC WK2 ). No leaks, no malfunctions, a pleasure in summer and winter. If you can afford to spend the money it's worth it. If you have to borrow to buy, then perhaps not !

Sunroof is non-negotiable for me. And I seldom open it at all.

What it does for me is make the car feel less cramped by creating the illusion of more space. When I close the visor, or when I'm in a car with no sunroof, I feel so claustrophobic in a car.

Thanks man, will def spec one. Makes the car look so much better and think it could be quite a cool thing to have, especially along a nice windy coastal road.. Not as good as an open top car, but second best option :)

Love my sunroof. Use it pretty much everyday in the tilt position and every other day I like to open it fully.
